| mycouponz's Full Review: Red Lion Hotel at the Quay |
I stayed at this hotel recently for two nights as I was in Portland for another Scrabble tournament. We were looking for a cheaper alternative to the tournament hotel, a Holiday Inn, which was $100 per night. Our room at the Red Lion was won on Priceline at a cost of US$46, and as there were two of us staying in the room, my end was $23 per night. I had stayed at a Red Lion hotel once before, and was very impressed by their service and room quality.
For the price paid, I couldn't be happier with the hotel. It was a quick ten minute drive from this hotel to the Holiday Inn, and in fact we passed two other Red Lion hotels on the way there. The Red Lion at the Quay is also just fifteen minutes from Portland's major airport.
As my roommate took care of checking in and out of the hotel, I did not deal with the front desk staff at all. However, the first morning I was there, we had breakfast at the Pacific Grill and Chowder House. We sat next to the window facing the Columbia River and it offered a great view. I ordered a cheese omelette, and it came with toast and hashbrowns. The meal came to about $10, which was a bit on the steep side, but there was plenty of food, and we were in and out within about 30-40 minutes. I had no qualms with the service while we were there.
Our room was in the non-smoking section and had two queen beds. Without any discounts or promotional codes, the same room goes for upwards of $100, according to Red Lion's website. Our room did not offer much of a view, but was otherwise exceptional. It had plenty of space, and all the amenities I had expected.
Speaking of amenities, it had a refrigerator and microwave. My roommate was able to use the complimentary high-speed internet access in the room. We were also treated to a television in our room, and the one time I turned it on I found they had a few sports, news and movie channels. The hotel also had a pool and fitness area, although while we were there the pool was closed.
At the very least, I'm usually quite picky with the pillows hotels provide, and at worst, I get frustrated with the mattresses. Luckily, neither of these proved to be a problem, and I slept soundly both nights. Once I went to bed, I heard nary a sound from the hallway or from other rooms, things I've almost come to expect at some hotels. Each bed had four pillows, and several layers of covers, blankets, etc. I made sure to pull off the covers at three corners of the bed to check for bed bugs, or signs that they had been around, and was happy to see that there was no sign of them.
The only gripe I had was that the washroom was quite small. Relative to the size of the rest of the room, they could have made it larger. I also didn't like the showerhead, as it only had a few spray settings, and I had to turn the actual head to adjust it. None of the settings were to my liking. The washroom was stocked with about a dozen towels of different sizes, a couple soaps and skin creams and the usual shampoo and conditioner. I liked the latter two enough that I brought some home along with me - I especially like the smell of the shampoo.
Another minor gripe was that the parking lot was not that well lit. Both nights we came back around eleven pm, and by that time the lot was quite full. We found a spot both times without much hassle. I should also mention that parking was free, and was right in front of the hotel.
Overall, I was very pleased with the Red Lion Hotel at the Quay. I didn't spend much time there, but I did have two very peaceful and comfortable nights. The breakfast was above average and the room was spacious, tidy and well stocked.
