| Kittyokc's Full Review: Robitussin CF Cough Syrup - 4 Ounce |
Robitussin is a brand our doctor likes to recommend whenever the kids have bad colds with an annoying cough, I just wish they would make it taste better. I usually only turn to it when the kids cough is disturbing their sleep, mainly because it's such a fight to get them to take it.
The latest one that was recommend to us was Robitussin CF because regular cold medicines did OK with the stuffy noses, but did nothing for the cough. I knew it would help my son, but I also knew that I would have a big fight on my hands to get him to take it.
Robitussin CF is a cough suppressant, cough expectorant and a nasal decongestant all in one medicine. Pretty self-explanatory, the decongestant helps unstuff your nose, the expectorant helps make your cough more productive and the suppressant helps suppress that annoying tickling cough and that will help you be able to sleep better. The active ingredients are dextromethorphan, guaifenesin and pseudoephedrine.
As with most medicines, it has the standard warnings that you see on most cold medicines. If you have any medical conditions, you should always ask your doctor first before taking any over the counter medication. If you already have a cough with a lot of mucus, you should talk to your doctor first since it could be a sign of something more serious than just a cold. Because the decongestant is pseudoephedrine, you need to check with your doctor first if you already have high blood pressure, because pseudoephedrine can raise your blood pressure. This is something that you should remember with any cold medicine with this in it if you have high blood pressure.
The dosages are clearly stated on the box and bottle and go by age only. The dosages are listed for age 2 and up, under two you need to consult a doctor. It may be given every 4 hours as needed, but it states right on the bottle to not take any more than 4 does in a 24 hour period. If you do the math, and you need to take it every 4 hours for your cough, that will leave 8 hours in the day that you can't take it and it could leave you suffering.
Luckily, we never ran into the above problem since my son really only needed this at night so the cough wouldn't keep him awake and one dose usually did the trick for the whole night. Granted, I would here some coughing here and there, but it wasn't enough to wake him up, so it did the job it was supposed to do.
As with all liquid cough medicines, it tastes horrible, so if you're giving this to a child, be prepared for a fight. My youngest son hates taking medicine, but cough medicine is the worst for him and it took me about 15 minutes of itty bitty sips, so he wouldn't spit it all out, to get him to take a 1/2 teaspoon of Robitussin CF.
Luckily the cough subsided enough where he only had to take it for two nights, I'm not sure who was more happy about that, me or him. My older son is easier to give medicine to, he won't fight me, he'll just say "yuck" or "ewww" and make faces while taking it. Every time he sees the bottle of Robitussin CF, he's says "not the yucky medicine." He knows it helps him, so he doesn't fight, but he hates the taste and I don't blame him.
If your child has a really bad stuffy nose and annoying cough, I would recommend you give Robitussin CF a try, just be prepared for a possible fight in getting them to take it and also be prepared for all the faces they may make when they do take it.
