Robitussin CF Cough Syrup - Relief in the Throes of a Sinus Infection

Pros: works great on my cough and chest congestion
Cons: my nose is still runny
The Bottom Line: I'll keep this around for anytime I need to relieve a cough with chest congestion. It will be interesting to see if the decongestant works better on an average cold.

It never fails that whenever I do extensive cleaning where I kick up a lot of dust, I end up with a sinus infection. This year I was lucky for a while, but I pushed my luck and after three weeks of thoroughly cleaning my house, the annual sinus infection finally kicked in.
I also hate doctors with a passion, and I pretty much have to be on death’s door before I call for that appointment. After just a couple of days, I was feeling a heaviness in my chest and having coughing fits. One night of sleep being constantly interrupted convinced me that this was going to be a brutal infection.
I took something my husband had in the medicine cabinet that morning and hated it. As soon as I got the kids off to school, I headed to the drugstore to find some non-prescription relief. My criteria was something to keep me from coughing so much as well as getting the congestion I already had out of my chest. If it could alleviate my nasal congestion a little as well, all the better. However, my experience with sinus infections has been that unlike colds, the nasal congestion never completely goes away no matter what I take until I am over it.
On the shelf I found exactly what I was looking for in Robitussin CF Cough Syrup. The package promised that it would control coughs, loosen & relieve chest congestion, and clear nasal stuffiness. I took the dosage of two teaspoons in the plastic cup provided and waited to see if it made a difference.
Robitussin CF Cough Syrup contains a cough suppressant, expectorant, and nasal decongestant. These are in the form of Dexttromethorphan HBr USP, Guaifenesin USP, and Pseudoephedrine HCI USP. The idea seems to be not to eliminate my coughing completely, but to make the coughing I do more productive in terms of getting the phlegm out of my lungs.
I found that the Robitussin CF Cough Syrup did an excellent job or relieving my chest congestion. Within a matter of hours I felt the heaviness lift from my chest and my breathing was much easier. My coughs toned done too, although they didn’t disappear completely. With regard to the nasal stuffiness, it helped, although my nose was still running. However, I think part of it is due to the fact that this is also allergy season for me and I won’t mix medications. I did notice immediately if I exceeded the four-hour window in between doses that my chest began feeling congested again.
Robitussin is a name which should be familiar to most people. It is recommended most often by doctors and pharmacists for relief of coughs. The Robitussin CF Cough Syrup is a formula designed to be used by the whole family. It is alcohol-free and contains dosage instructions for ages two years through adults. It doesn’t promise to be non-drowsy, but I didn’t find that I felt sleepy or run-down after using it.
I would turn to Robitussin CF Cough Syrup again in a heartbeat for any issues with coughing or chest congestion. It seems to be relieving my symptoms wonderfully without my having to make a doctor visit. I would also feel confident giving it at a lower dose to my children should they need it for the same reason.

The active ingredients in Robitussin CF Cough Syrup are Dextromethorphan HBr USP 10mg (Cough Suppressant), Guaifenesin, USP 100mg (Expectorant), Pseudoephedrine HCI, USP 30mg (Nasal Decongestant).
The inactive ingredients in Robitussin CF Cough Syrup are Citric Acid, FD&C Red 40, Flavors, Glycerin, Propylene Glycol, Saccharin Sodium, Sodium Benzoate, Sorbitol, Water.
Product Warnings
Do not use Robitussin CF Cough Syrup if you are now taking a prescription monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) (certain drugs for depression, psychiatric, or emotional conditions, or Parkinson's disease), or for 2 weeks after stopping the MAOI drug. If you do not know if your prescription drug contains an MAOI, ask a doctor or pharmacist before taking Robitussin CF Cough Syrup .
As a doctor before using Robitussin CF Cough Syrup if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, thyroid disease, diabetes, trouble urinating due to an enlarged prostate gland, cough that occurs with too much phlegm (mucus), cough that lasts or is chronic such as occurs with smoking, asthma, chronic bronchitis or emphysema.
When using Robitussin CF Cough Syrup do not use more than directed. Stop using Robitussin CF Cough Syrup and ask a doctor if you get nervous, dizzy, or sleepless.; if symptoms do not get better with 7 days or are accompanied by fever; if a cough lasts more than 7 days, comes back, or is accompanied by fever, rash, or persistent headache. If pregnant or breast-feeding, ask a healthy professional before use.
