Pros:Decent taste, inexpensive, no side effects
Cons:Contain sugar, young children may mistake them for candy
The Bottom Line: Great for calming a tickling cough and soothing minor sore throat pain temporarily. Taste good. Not for severe symptoms.
I always try to keep some kind of cough/sore throat lozenges around for those times when all I need is something to relieve a scratchy throat or tickling cough. I was reminded recently how soothing Robitussin Cherry Cough Drops can be, when a cold with bronchial issues was trying to get me. I managed to fend off the worst symptoms, but did have a sore throat with a pretty good cough going for a while.
~ Product Description
Robitussin Cherry Cough Drops come packaged in a bag containing 25 individually wrapped cough drops. Robitussin claims on the packaging these drops control coughs and soothe and calm sore throats. Suggested uses, for temporary relief, of occasional minor irritation, pain, sore mouth, and sore throat. Or temporary relief of a cough associated with a cold or inhaled irritants.
The active ingredient in each drop is Menthol, USP 5 mg. Menthol is an oral pain reliever and a cough suppressant. Inactive ingredients are: Corn Syrup, FC&C Red No. 40, Flavor, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Sodium Benzoate, Sucrose.
The directions for use are simple. Just allow one cough drop to dissolve slowly in the mouth. Can be repeated every 2 hours for a sore throat, or every hour for a cough. Children under 4 should consult a doctor before use. You should not use these for more than two days, unless directed by a doctor.
And folks, of course use your common sense here. If you have severe sore throat pain or a severe cough, see your doctor! It could be something serious. Robitussin cough drops are for minor symptoms only.
Each cough drop is wrapped individually, the wrapper twisted on the ends like a piece of candy. Yes, it might easily be mistaken for candy by children, so be careful how you store these.
~ My Experience
I had a minor, but definitely noticeable sore throat, and a deep bronchial cough that was productive. I didn't necessarily want to totally suppress the cough, because I was coughing up stuff, which is a good thing. But I was also having a tickling in my chest that kinda drove me nuts.
I took a Robitussin Cherry Cough Drop and let it dissolve like a piece of hard candy, which in fact it quite resembles in taste and texture. The cherry taste is fine with me - I liked it. In just a few moments I could already feel the soothing effects of the menthol coating my throat. It took several minutes for a drop to totally dissolve. The tickling part of the cough definitely calmed down, and my throat felt better. I'd say the relief lasted for about - oh maybe an hour. I think that day I took probably another two cough drops when I noticed the symptoms returning. The next day I only used about two cough drops, and then my symptoms were pretty much gone. You might be interested to note that my tongue only had a slightly pink color, and wasn't a flaming red after taking these.
Robitussin Cough Drops are perfect for soothing a sore throat after being around smoke or other inhaled irritants. I think this is one of their most effective uses. There are no side effects from this simple remedy for minor symptoms. That's always a plus in my book. They do contain sugar (corn syrup and sucrose) though, so keep that in mind.
Also, if you keep a couple cough drops in your car or purse, in very hot weather they will get soft and gummy, and the wrapper sticks and is difficult to remove.
~ Final Thoughts
Robitussin Cherry Cough Drop are great to have around, at home, in your purse, in the car, for anytime you notice an irritated, sore throat, or a slight tickling cough. They really do help soothe the pain and calm the cough temporarily. These cough drops are for minor symptoms, and won't totally relieve a very sore throat or bad cough.
