Phlegm. That nasty, gross gunk that sometimes accompanies colds. No one likes to deal with it but aside from the visual unpleasantness of it, it is just another way for germs to cross contaminate and infect others in your household. No matter how careful you are with it once youve expelled it, there is always a chance that someone will come in contact with it and lets face it its about as repulsive as baby vomit or slobber. The last time I had a major cold I was bogged down with a tremendous amount of phlegm. The hacking, coughing and retching that accompanied it didnt make things any better so I picked up a bottle of Robitussin Expectorant hoping to get a little relief. It didnt completely cure me but it did allow me to get a little rest and respite from the phlegm. After taking this I had about a ten minute wait for my phlegm to feel like it was starting to break up a little and before I knew it the coughing was accompanied by a modest amount of mucus. I repeated the dose every three to four hours or when ever the coughing didnt yield any of the mucus.
Since most of my other symptoms seemed under control and the phlegm was the biggest issue I decided to go with this product over others that were on the shelf. This is a good product to have on hand for both adults and children [over the age of two] but shouldnt be overused when a cold or flu is present. Nor should it be combined with other over the counter medications that are being taken since there could be some issues with ingredients causing interactions with others. There is a complete list of warnings and precautions printed on both the box as well as the bottle and you should read over these before using it. Women who are nursing, those who have been on or who are currently on any type of mediation for depression or anti psychotic meds should first consult a physician. I didnt experience any drowsiness when using this but that isnt to say that you will have the same luck. Its best not to operate machinery, drive a vehicle or work with power tools when taking over the counter medications even more so if you are sensitive to any of the ingredients.
Dosage
Robitussin suggests that adults take two to four teaspoons every four hours with children six to twelve one to two teaspoons every four hours. While the manufacturers have a child dose for those two to six [one half teaspoon every four hours] I suggest checking the pediatric Robitussin products first before purchasing this for the use of a child. If this is all you have in the house and cant make it to a store to purchase a specialty product, this will doin a pinch but its generally best to have a specific cough medicine for a child on hand when they are between the ages of two and six. Personally, I take about four teaspoons every four hours but you might not need that much. Its best to start out with the smallest amount [two teaspoons] and see if that works for you, if not, add another teaspoon with the next dose. There is a limit of six doses per 24 hour period and if you need more than this amount per day, you may want to consult with your physician to see if there is a more serious situation than just the common cold or flu.
Ingredients
Guaifenesin, citric acid, glucose, glycerin, high fructose corn syrup, saccharin sodium, sodium benzoate, water. The amount of guaifenesin contained in each teaspoon is listed as 100 milligrams so you will have to do the math to see exactly how much you are ingesting ] depending on the number of teaspoons you are taking] The guaifenesin is the ingredient that helps break up the mucus and allow you to pull up more of the phlegm. You should read over the complete list of ingredients before using this to see if you are allergic to any of the contents of the product. From time to time manufacturer change their ingredients when newer and more effective agents become available.
Things To Know
• If you want to save a little cash when purchasing Robitussin products, visit their official website at www.robitussin.com to get a $1.00 coupon. You will have to fill in a small form and select whether or not you want to receive further offers but for the most part, it is a painless procedure that can be completed in less than 2 minutes.
• This comes packaged inside a box and both the bottle and box have safety seals to prevent tampering. If either of the seals are broken, return it to the pace of purchase for an exchange.
• A measuring cup is attached to the top of the bottle and allows accurate measuring of the liquid. If you happen to lose it, stop by your local pharmacy and ask if they can give you a replacement.
• Be sure to check the expiration date on the box before you purchase this product, the same expiration date also appears on the side of the label on the bottle. I suggest placing a piece of tape over the expiration date to keep it from getting smeared or blurred since more often than not the bottle will need to get wiped off after use.
The Bottom Line
This product works. If you have a cough and cant seem to bring up the phlegm, this is a great thing to have on hand. If you are experiencing other cold or flu symptoms you might want to check out the other Robitussin products to see if there is a combo product that will tackle all your issues instead of having to take multiple products and worrying about interactions or sleep issues. When I took this I was able to get some rest, pull up some of the phlegm and stop sounding like a chain smoker. I do suggest drinking a few extra glasses of water when taking this since colds tend to dehydrate the body. If you have any questions about this product or any of the others in the Robitussin line, you can call their toll free customer service line at 800-762-4672 or use the contact form at the online site.
As always, thanks for the read!
