| LaFeet's Full Review: Rock Creek Black Raven Porter |
It is a sad, sad day. I just found out that a beer that I managed to stumble upon is no longer being produced. I am hoping that my informant is mistaken, otherwise we have lost out on a great beer.
The Rock Creek Brewing Company was located in Raleigh, North Carolina. Reportedly, they seem to have ceased to exist sometime in early 2003. I have been told that it was a brew house established in the most traditional manner.
Black Raven Porter, is, or was a dark London style porter that I have enjoyed over the last week.
Opening the bottle allows you to experience the first hints of what is in store.
Pouring allows one to observe the rich brownish auburn (and yet almost black) hue fill the glass. The head quickly forms, a tall luxurious tan head over an inch thick. The lace rains gently down the inside of the glass, providing visual enlightenment.
I could not hold back
..
A deep quaff introduced me to both the aroma and taste simultaneously.
Roasted hazelnuts, dark chocolate, clover and a hint of bing cherries tickle my nose as I reach for a second drink.
My tongue felt like a MENSA member. The even with a light amount of carbonation a flood of flavors swirled around each taste bud. And the Tongue was happy. Roasted malts and coffees, smoldering cedar all compliment a slight chocolate sweetness. MMmmmmmmmm, I found myself past due for another taste. Each sip is not quite the same, the flavors seem to fade in and out as the liquid dances in your mouth. Even though it is quite heavy in body, the texture is creamy smooth. Again, another drink is needed.
I found myself slowing down the pace at which I was enjoying this beer. I knew that there was more on the dusty shelves back in the liquor store here. But the beer warranted being savored.
This beer is a stand alone drink. And yet, I would balance a light meal with this brew.
Again, it is a sad day. I will only be able to enjoy the remnants of the two cases the liquor store off loaded into my care.
