| ceylona's Full Review: Rock and Roll Elmo |
I purchased RnR Elmo for my then 7 month old son, mostly for my own entertainment. See, I discovered that my little munchkin's got rhythm watching him rocking back and forth on his not yet crawling belly in time to a friend's pet Elmo!
When I say rocking, I don't mean lolling back and forth to a gentle ballad. A touch of the button on Elmo's guitar sets Elmo vibrating and my son belly be-bopping away to the likes of ABC, 123 and Shake, Rattle and Roll. It's truly one of the most hilarious things I've ever seen. I obviously had to get him his very own!
Now I don't know if Elmo will inspire everyone's child to perform amusing dances, but he's compelling all in himself. RnR Elmo is a sitting plush toy, all fuzzy and red with big round hard plastic eyes atop his head. My teething son loves to mouth these. He's dressed in blue jeans and a shiny black jacket which houses the battery. He holds a plastic guitar with flashing colored lights that Elmo strums in time to the music. The music starts when a small button on the neck of the guitar is pressed, and Elmo vibrates along with his tunes (where vibrating fits into the rock n roll theme, I'm not sure, but whatever. My son happens to love vibrating toys). The songs are recorded in Elmo's unmistakeable high pitched voice--cute in that same way chipmunks songs are cute!
As a plush toy goes, he's a bit on the firm side, but not uncuddleable. My son wraps his arms around him after he plays his music, and they fall over together in a big bear hug.
I know the age recommendations say 18 months, but I could find no hazards for those younger. And really, sitting Elmo isn't much smaller than sitting 7 month old---it's like having a real friend that sings to you! Granted, 7 month olds like to pull at Elmo's strumming arm (maybe it's their knack for destruction that excludes younger babes from the age recommendations), but he's not damaged Elmo so far.
Fair Warning to all would be buyers: Elmo has one volume setting (LOUD) and no off switch other than removal of the battery. If you accidentally hit his button near a sleeping baby, you're doomed! That's 30 seconds of Rockin' Elmo like it or not, and you're only chance is muffling him under a blanket or rushing the doll out of the room and praying all the while.
