| CJsMommy's Full Review: Rocking Horse |
My son has grown up around horses. His grandparents own two of their own, so when he was very young, he was introduced to ponies. My father-in-law even went as far as to put him in the saddle before his first birthday. (Needless to say, I wasn't real happy when I heard that....) Unfortunately for my in-laws, my son hasn't real taken a liking to flesh and blood horses. Luckily for my son, we had a plastic solution to his problem:)
I've been lucky enough to have a step-sister who has two sons that are older than my own son. This means I inherited all her old clothes and toys! Lots less shopping for me, and lots more stuff for my little guy:) One of the toys we inherited was the Little Tikes Rocking Horse . My son may be afraid of the real thing, but this little pony is his new best friend!
The Little Tikes Rocking Horse is fairly simple to explain. It's a teal color, with black and white eyes, yellow handles, and the Little Tikes logo on the side. And that's it for color. Like I said....simple.
The horse itself is pretty cute. It sits on a wide base (teal) and is all molded together. No screws or parts to come loose here! From the base, the body is about 2 1/2 feet high. The seat is cut into the body, and is fairly wide for those little toddler bottoms. The head of the horse has two eyes and the yellow handles coming out the middle for children to hang on to. There is also a molded mane running down the back of the head. The tail is molded off the back of the body.
My son has liked this toy since he was about 9 months old. I wouldn't say it was truly appropriate for him at that age, but he liked to play with it anyway (always supervised, of course.) He really wasn't able to use it properly and by himself until recently (he's now 18 months old). Prior to now, we had to set him on the horse in order for him to rock. Now, his legs are long enough so that he can climb on it himself.
I've found, from watching my son, that the Little Tikes Rocking Horse is very safe. My son gets a little wild with his rocking, and I've never been worried about it tipping over. The base is wide enough to prevent that. We have a wooden rocking horse that is much bigger and heavier, and that has tipped over.
The horse is made out of lightweight plastic, and is easy to move around. Even my son has no problem pushing or shoving it all over his room. It is a little large, so may be hard to store for those with smaller houses or apartments. There's nothing to fold up, so what you see is what you have to store...
One thing I've found is that my son also likes to use his Little Tikes Rocking Horse as a step stool, so this is something parents will have to watch out for. He hasn't fallen yet (as I've been there to get him down), but I'm always afraid he's going to lose his balance if he stands on there and the horse rocks. Because of this, I would suggest always keeping an eye on your toddler when they are using the toy.
Although the Little Tikes Rocking Horse is a simple toy, my son has gotten quite a bit of use out of it. He won't ride the real thing, so it's nice to know he can get practice on a horse of his own! There aren't any bells and whistles, but there really aren't any necessary. It's a great toy for toddler 18 months until about the age of 3. After that, unless you have a small child, the toy may be a little too small. I have tried it out though, and it does hold my weight:) (No fat jokes....please!)
Little Tikes has kept this one simple, but it lives up to their high standards. It's fun, easy to use, and sturdy. So, the next time your child asks for a pony, check out the Little Tikes Rocking Horse , and buy them a horse today!
