| zeecee's Full Review: Rocking Horse Mexican Cafe |
This restaurant has been around for years and was reviewed this week in the NY Times, not enthusiastically, but it's always hard to find a Mexican restaurant in New York, well a good one, so we decided to check it out. The food looked presentable and attractive and the variety of dishes seemed impressive. People had nicely colored drinks on their tables and we were optimistic.
We started with chips and salsa, nicely presented and tasty. The chips weren't those faux, dry thing, but tasty and crunchy enough to be promising. The margarita had no flavor, but I continued to hold out hope. It didn't give me a buzz, so my guess is it was low in Tequila as well as flavor. Main course were burrito type things with a nouvelle twist, a flowered squash quesadilla made with goat cheese that had some kind of salad on top, which didn't work at all. My husband had the chicken enchilada with black beans and said he'd never go back; it was that bad. He ordered an espresso and it was so tiny, he asked for more, simply on principal. Even my espresso wasn't flavored well enough. We skipped dessert.
Entrees are generally over $20; appetizers are in the $8 range. Portions aren't huge, but it's that old joke, 'It wasn't good and there wasn't enough of it." The new chef, Barbara Bogart, trained with some of New York's primo chefs, but we were all decidedly unimpressed. Nothing seemed to be seasoned happily.
Even so, it was crowded, but maybe the shortage of Mexican retaurants in New York guarantees takers regardless of quality.
The decor is fine.

Notes, Tips or Menu Recommendations I'd go for appetizers and beer, little else. Even the Margarita was disappointing. Best Suited For: Friends
