The Rocking Horse Cafe, (182 Eighth Avenue between 17th and 18th Streets)
used to be my favorite Mexican Restaurant on the Eighth Avenue Restaurant strip. Then they closed and remodeled (two years ago?) and since they've re-opened I find that I don't enjoy the new ambiance. It used to have a comfy cozy old Mexican feel. Now that they have remodeled, it feels too slick, and modern. It's trying too hard to be trendy, and go with the so-called 'Chelsea Look.'
The food is still good, but is lacking that traditional Mexican feel, that it used to have. The dishes all have been updated, and have a nouvelle cuisine appearance. (Read as small portions, with an emphasis on food display). I once ordered a burrito and when it came I was shocked to see that it was only as big as an egg roll! I ended up ordering another one to supplement this meager meal. I don't feel that the prices are fare for the amount of food that you get. You can get a better meal at another Mexican restaurant for less pesos.
They still do have a fun brunch on weekends. It's not your traditional brunch food, instead they have egg filled burritos, and salsa omelettes. And the bread that comes with your meal is a tasty jalapeno cornbread.
