andrewself's Full Review: Max Payne for PlayStation 2
Ok ok ok ok, I'll be downright honest, I wanted this game just to check out the bullet time gimmick. I went and bought the game and I was impressed greatly by the story and the gameplay which would have been great even without bullet time.
Graphics
Oh wow what a beautiful game. The textures and models are great and present a perfect setting for the gritty vision of New York City. Although there is sometimes a little slowdown but not nothing to bother anyone. And the bullet time is great, seeing actual modeled bullets is awesome.
Audio
Great voice overs and great music. Reminds me much of a film noir graphic novel. Sometimes a little fuzzy but again all games have their issues. Max Payne has a great voice.
Gameplay
One of the best 3rd person shooters out there even if it didnt have the bullet time. Weapon switching is somewhat easy and the wide variety of weapons is nice. Although it does get somewhat repetitive running around shooting people it's just so much fun not to stop playing :). The film noir style/comic book cutscenes I guess you could say are very cool and expect many imitators for bullet time and the noir feel.
Great game, but some levels are disturbing especially the ones with Jack Pupino. If I remember correctly, in the nightclub he starts chanting many different versions of the devil's name and there are Ouiji boards and witchcraft symbols everywhere. Not for young gamers definitely with the cult themes.
