johnnywinter's Full Review: Max Payne for PlayStation 2
Once again I come before you to write a review on a Rockstar Games production, this one, unlike my first for GTA 3, is based on a game that is much more acceptable by my and many others thoughts.
This game is based around the life of N.Y.P.D. Detective Max Payne, who arrives home one night to find his wife and baby shot up, and laying in a blood soaked bed. There were no leads what so ever, except the random "V" sign that is graffitied all over N.Y. and his house. Immediately Max begins in pursuit of the men that did this, in cold, winter night, with nothing to lose.
The second that the game was turned on and I was in the action I realized immediately that I was playing one of the most carefully designed games of the year, intense realistic graphics with the new and improved radiosity lighting made me feel like I was actually Max Payne, and that my wife and child were shot, and that I was pursuing the killers with nothing to lose.
The handling that I had with Max was unbelievable, at first it took awhile to get used to the move with one controller and look with the other, but now and then I always prefer due to the fact that it gives you more control. One thing that was original and fresh was Rockstar's new platinum creation, BulletTime. This polished off the already shimmering game title, and gameplan. The BulletTime feature is a feature that slows down the game for a certain amount of seconds to a point at which you can see bullets glide through the air at you.
This is another thing Rockstar did perfectly, now it would be one thing if you could see the bullets, but what if you could see them with a slight tracer fire? Yes, much better huh? Thought so. This makes BulletTime the best of the best, because in this slowed down world, you are able to react as if living in the present at the present's speed of passing time.
Along with all this, Rockstar went ahead and created a collection of weapons so large its unbelievable. They managed to include famous known weapons of warfare such as;
Molotov Cocktail
Grenade
M92 Berreta/ Dualies available
Desert Eagle
M11 Uzi/ Dualies available
MP5 Navy
M16 Assault Rifle
Sniple Rifle
with all these you cant go bored, and your always guarenteed to have ammo considering the large number of guys that you are constantly offing.
A game like Max Payne, is one of which you must continously play over and over again whether the second time you play with cheats, or not, it's still fun. That's one of it's immunities.
One of the greatest parts of this game is it's orginal, calm, intro music played by a violin and a piano or something, either way it's nice to listen to, and it as well provides a spooky kind of theme of it's own. The perfect Max Payne theme.
The only fault of Max Payne are the dreams. If you've played the game, you know what I mean and I bet my car that you agree they get annoying. Anyways the dreams that Max has, usually at the beginning or end of a chapter, place him in a room with nearly endless hallways, tricky walls, and narrow paths. To get him out you have to have patience, and extreme uber skill.
All in all, I would definately tell you and anyone to buy this game. It's perfect and practically for all ages hence the obscene language and blood lusted walls. The games spooky, there's no doubt about that, but it's good, and I would pay you to get it, except I won't.
