About Me: Some Assembly Required.... The Avengers

Sweet Transvestites Raising Money for Charity. RICHARD O'BRIEN'S ROCKY HORROR TRIBUTE SHOW.

Written: Aug 19 '10 (Updated Dec 14 '10)
Pros:Nostalgic Cult Classic, Anthony Head in make up.  Riff Raff, Columbia and Magenta.
Cons:It isn't the full production; just the musical bits.
The Bottom Line: Really, its just the songs, sung for a benefit.  But it is still enjoyable, and if you are an Unconventional Conventionalist, this is a must see.

Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.

Richard O'Brien's Rocky Horror Tribute.   Directed by Christopher Luscombe.

If you are looking for a version of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, or a documentary about that Iconic Cult Film, then this is not what you are looking for.  What this actually consists of is the 2007 benefit performance to raise funds for Amnesty International.  To that end, Richard O'Brien collected many performers back to the Belasco Theatre, where 33 years earlier, they had staged that first production of Rocky Horror.

For a note of nostalgia; the stage play is introduced by an Usherette.  Way back when it was Patricia Quinn who also played Magenta and that lady graciously opens the festivities with her rendition of Science Fiction Double Feature.

In the Film version, it is Richard O'Brien who sings this intro, but those are Patricia's lips on the screen, in a sort of incestuous collaboration.  (Richard actually doesn't have any lips, so....)

At any rate; the non singing parts are narrated by a collection of tuxedoed gentlemen who move the story along to the next musical number.  Various performers and singers lend their voices, with minimal costuming, to the proceedings.  Here is a list of the numbers, and who sang what part.

Science Fiction: Usherette (Patricia Quinn) Ever the showman, she enters in a cloud of glitter, and 33 years later, shows you why she was chosen for the role in the first place.
Damn it, Janet: Brad (Adrian Edmondson) Geek in a bow tie, Janet (Sophie Lawrence) but she has a set of pipes.
Over at the Frankenstein Place: Brad (Adrian Edmondson), Janet (Sophie Lawrence), Riff Raff (Kraig Thornber) Looks rather like Riff Raff, and has the accent down better than most.
Time Warp: Riff Raff (Kraig Thornber), Columbia (Amy Field) Lovely statuesque Amazon whose voice is remarkably close to Little Nell's, Magenta (Toyah Wilcox)
Sweet Transvestite: Frank, (Anthony Head), (OMG Rupert Giles can SING!  And he looks not half bad in half drag) Brad (Adrian Edmondson), Magenta (Toyah Wilcox), Columbia, (Amy Field), Riff Raff (KraigThornber)
The Sword of Damocles: Rocky (Gary Amers) Cute little boy who at least sang it shirtless; he had a lot better voice than Trevor White, the guy who dubbed in for Peter Hinwood.
Hot Patootie Bless My Soul: Eddie (Ben Richards) I never thought of Eddie as hot until now.  A few scars comprised his costume, but this guy can keep delivering the tightly packed lyrics like a machinegun, a feat previously only done by Meatloaf.
Touch-a touch-a touch me: Janet (Jo Farrell)This Janet looks more the part with the same huge expressive eyes that Susan Sarandon used to such effect, Magenta (Toyah Wilcox), Columbia (Amy Field)
Once in a While: Brad (Stephen Gately) This rarely heard number is not in the movie.  Gately gives it a soulful longing that really sells it.
Eddie's Teddy: Dr Scott (Julian Littman) He should have gone for the German Accent, Frank (Anthony Head), Columbia (Amy Field)
Planet Schmanet: Frank (Anthony Head), Janet (Jo Farrell)
Floor Show: Columbia (Amy Field), Rocky (Gary Amers), Brad (Adrian Edmondson), Janet (Jo Farrell), Frank (Michael Ball) Yes, the musical theatre Michael Ball, and yes, you do get to see why he is such a big deal; what a voice!  Dr Scott (Julian Littman), Magenta (Toyah Wilcox), Riff Raff (Kraig Thornber)
I m Going Home: Frank (Michael Ball)
Super Heroes: Brad (Adrian Edmondson), Janet (Jo Farrell)
Time Warp reprise: Full Company with Richard O'Brien, Little Nell, Patricia Quinn.  Let me say this; thirty three years has not blunted their talent in the slightest.  Richard belted out the old tune with the same passion, as did Little Nell.  And the girl can still tap dance up a storm.

Is it an earth shattering production?  No.  Neither was Rocky Horror if you will recall. Is it an essential part of the Rocky Horror experience?  No.  Can't really say that it is.  Is it a lot of fun, and for a very good cause.  Absolutely.  Proceeds go to support Amnesty International.  So order a copy, get the popcorn (and the rice) and enjoy.
