One day while prowling through the walk in humidor of my local smoke shop, I came across the Rocky Patel Edge Lite Toro, and I added a couple of these cigars to my sampler for the week. I had already been advised by the proprietor, who knows my tastes in cigars, that the Rocky Patel Edge was probably a bit strong for me, so I decided to give the Edge Lite a whirl, in the classic Toro size.
The Rocky Patel Edge Lite Toro is 6 inches long with a ring size of 52. It has an Ecuadorian grown Connecticut wrapper that envelopes Honduran long leaf Ligero filler. The wrapper was smooth and almost flawless, and the label of the cigar was really a thin band wrapped around the end to be lit. The filler was packed well, and the cigar gave the appearance of a well-made, no nonsense Toro.
The Edge Lite Toro burned slowly and evenly, with a nice smooth draw. The draw was pretty consistent throughout the smoke, but it seemed to me to be a little airy towards the end, with an accompanying sense of heat, although this could be attributed to the strength of the cigar, which I rate as stronger than mild and milder than strong, if that makes any sense.
The Edge Lite Toro had pleasing but in-your-face flavors. I detected plenty of pepper, along with peat and earth undertones. The flavors were ample, and I attribute that to the Ligero long leaf filler used in this smoke. The Connecticut wrapper provided a hint of sweetness and creaminess in the finish, but the flavor of the filler obviously dominated in this cigar. Perhaps the intent of the folks at Rocky Patel was to balance the boldness of the filler with the lightness of the wrapper, but the filler won, and gives the Rocky Patel Edge Lite a hearty, muscular flavor that's just a bit more than what I'm looking for in a cigar.
I really want to stress that this is a fine cigar, it's just not the cigar for me. Those of you who like a strong cigar with just a little of the edge (pardon the pun!) taken off will like this one just fine.
Thanks for reading.
