Bryan_Carey's Full Review: Rogue American Amber 22oz
One of the nations best craft- brewing operations is found in the city of Newport, Oregon. This brewer makes many great products among a wide range of beer styles and can be counted on to produce beer that is slightly above average at the very worst and outstanding at the best.
The brewery Im referring to is Rogue, one of the most familiar names in fine craft beer. This operation brews more than a dozen different products for your beer drinking pleasure. And one of these is Rogue American Amber Ale, a great- tasting beer with just the right amount of sweetness and hop balance.
Basic Characteristics of This Beer:
Rogue American Amber pours out to a cloudy orange/red/brown color with a lightly tan head of foam with good retention. The aroma of this product is very enticing, with hints of caramel, quality malt, bread, and spicy, citrusy hops with floral notes.
The primary flavors present in this beer include sweet, toasted malt; caramel; and citrus fruit, mainly orange and a little grapefruit. The hop finish attempts to balance out the overall flavor, but is only partially successful. It still remains on the sweet side overall.
Rogue brews this beer using English, Harrington, Klages, Vienna, and Crystal malts; Cascade and Kent Golding hops; and Pacman ale yeast. The product has a starting gravity of 13.1 degrees plato with a 5.17 percent alcohol by volume and 176 calories in a 12 oz. serving. The bitterness level is 53 IBU.
Food Compatibility:
This beer offers a good amount of versatility for ale. It would match up nicely with most any meat dish, from beef to turkey to lamb. It would also go well with any salty food, from pretzels to a burger and fries platter. And, of course, it is very good consumed all by itself.
Final Thoughts:
Rogue is one of my favorite craft breweries in the United States. I appreciate the fact that this brewery makes such a wide range of products. And I also appreciate the fact that, no matter what it makes, the beer always seems to come out tasting good.
Rogue American Amber Ale is a beer that offers a nice balance between the caramelized, toasted malt taste and the citrus taste supplied by the Cascade hops, as well as the spicy/floral taste from the Kent Goldings hops. The beer still ends up just slightly on the sweet side, with a pleasant aftertaste of Cascade and Kent Goldings hops.
The taste of this beer reminds me very much of a barley wine with about 40 percent of the alcohol removed and some of the heaviness taken away. In many ways, its like a mild version of some of the well- known barley wines produced out on the west coast. And its sweeter profile makes it even more drinkable and pleasant overall, compared to many of the richer barley wine that is often too thick and/or bitter for many consumers to appreciate.
Rogue sells this beer only in 22 oz (650 ml) bottles. You cannot buy this in 12 oz. bottled form. It isnt too difficult to find, though. Since it offers a flavor profile that is acceptable and easy- drinking, it is offered at most any retail outlet that sells Rogue products.
Chalk up Rogue American Amber Ale as yet another great- tasting beer from the brewers at this highly respected brewery. Its the type of beer that is very pleasant to drink, very versatile, and very agreeable to most drinkers. With a medium body and a good amount of complexity, this beer is one worth seeking out.
Tawny in color, with a coffee aroma, tight head and a delicate roasted malt accent. Generous use of hops and a smooth finish. rogue.comMore at GarysWine.com
