Pros: great tasting ale at a great price.
Cons: uninspired packaging
Ive seen the 22-oz bomber bottle of various Rogue ales in my favorite liquor superstore for quite some time, but Ive never been intrigued. I guess the packaging looked a little cheesy, maybe looking for a hip sort of vibe. I noticed some cutesy names, nothing compelling. While I appreciate a compelling package as much as anybody, theirs just didnt get much positive attention from me.
This is but one of many brews available in 22 oz bomber bottles from Rogue Ales of Newport, OR.
Then, I saw a review on something else from Rogue, by the category lead, Bruguru, so I decided to check it out. Among the many bottles on the shelf, this looked interesting. I enjoy the stout variety, and this had, according to the label, been a world stout champion. To make sure, I got in the checkout line of my guy, Nick. Nick first turned me on to Founders Brewing and his recommendations are almost always spot on. Nick said Id like it. Plus, the $4.99 price for the 22 oz bomber was right.
I managed to learn online that this has 6% abv.
The Nose A little bourbon, a faint bit of chocolate
The Pour Expansive head which hung in for a while. The color is a definite black. Some faint coffee appeared in the aroma.
The Taste Fairly light mouthfeel for a stout this is not quite medium at best. Coffee seems to be the predominant flavor, although there is some nice hop bitterness and light chocolate. Oddly enough, there is no sweetness with the chocolate. Cant say as Im surprised since the label reported 69 ibus.
The AftertasteThe hops wouldnt stop.
Food Pairings This would do well on its own or with light snacks. It might work with sandwiches, but I dont think it would go with steaks.
Final Thoughts this was quite likeable and its price makes me likely to buy it again. However, I liked Bells Kalamazoo Stout, Founders Imperial Stout and Goose Island Bourbon County Stout better.
4 stars .and theres a lot more from Rogue for me to check out in the days ahead.
Thanks for reading. God bless!
