Compact power, great tone, and it won't break the bank or your arm!

Pros:Great tone, portable, good effects and the feedback filter

Cons:You're tied to mains and there's no tweeter, but so what!

The Bottom Line: A great little acoustic guitar amp that delivers everything you could expect of it at the price point.

I have been looking for a compact acoustic guitar amp for some time. Good acoustic guitars like Taylors, Martins and Collings deserve to be played through good amps. Amps designed for acoustic guitars, amps with treble extension, low distortion and discreet effects. Not amps with settings like 'Insane' or 'Dirty' on their front panels.

I toyed with AERs, Crates and the Fender Acoustasonic, but finally settled on the Roland AC60. Like most other amps, it is wrapped in black. Unlike many amps, the Roland has the control panel on top, which makes it fine when sitting next to you as you play, but not much good if you decide to mount it on the optional stand.

The Roland has two channels, each rated at 30 watts RMS. One is a dedicated guitar channel, while the other will accept a microphone and even has optional phantom power. The Roland has both reverb and chorus and the latter effect can be set so as to give a wide range of impacts from 'spacey' through 'rich' to 'wide'. It also has a filter system for dealing with the old acoustic bugbear, feedback and it works very well indeed!

The amp has 2 x 6 inch wide frequency speakers with no separate tweeter. SOme would consider this an omission, but once you hear the sounds, it really isn't. At the end of the day, as long as the amp reproduces faithfully, it doesn't matter greatly whether it has a tweeter or not, especially as the first frequencies to be lost in a noisy venue are the high trebles anyway.

Another plus for the Roland is its portability. Although you are tied to mains power (no battery, not even as an option so the busking-potential is a bit limited), the unit is compact in size and comes with a carry bag and shoulder strap. Furthermore, it is light enough for the average musician to carry both the guitar and the amp on stage together (which cuts down on having to share your pay with a roadie).

The added bonus is the ability of the unit to double as a PA or foldback and you can play and sing through it at the same time (depending on whether you can actually sing!) All in all, I am glad I opted for the middle-ground. Sure AERs have the name, but so does Roland and it had all the right features at a much better price.
