My 8 year old daughter has had this book since she was little. She vaguely remembers Rolie Polie Olie when it used to be on the Disney Channel when she was little. She used to have a little Rolie Polie Olie doll that she carried around with her everywhere. When she was only 2 or 3 years old, she loved to have this book read to her. Rolie Polie Olie is written by William Joyce, copyrighted in 1999 and published by Harper Collins Publishers.
Rolie Polie Olie
Olie and his family come from a planet called Rolie Polie. Olie and his family are robotic creatures with mostly round features. This book is all about how Olie spends his day. Olie starts out by getting out of bed, brushing his teeth, etc. He then eats breakfast with his mom and pop and his sister Zowie and even his dog named Spot. After breakfast, they all do the "Rolie Polie Rumba Dance".
Before Olie can play, there are chores that need to be done. They have a "hip-hop mop" to clean up the house and other things that needed to be done. They actually had fun while doing the chores! The Rolie Polie family always has fun doing just about anything. Finally after the chores are done, Olie gets to play. They play all kinds of stuff outside. After the day is over and it's time for bed, Olie doesn't want to. He gets into trouble and he is sitting in bed by himself thinking about what he did until his parents finally came in to tuck him in until tomorrow when he starts over and they do the "Rolie Polie Rumba Dance" again.
My Thoughts............
I thought this was a cute book right from the start. The illustrations look like pictures that came right out of the TV show. Rolie Polie Olie isn't on anymore so our son who is almost 4 only knows Rolie Polie Olie from this book. Our daughter hardly remembers it at all since she was so young when she did watch it. She does remember wanting to read this book all the time though.
What I like about this book is the fact that Olie has to do everything he is supposed to before fun time. He has to follow his morning routine, and do his chores before he can play. Of course our kids being so young, there isn't much that is expected of them chores-wise. I love the fact that the book shows that work doesn't have to be work either. Work can be just as fun as playing. We remind them this when it comes to cleaning their rooms or something. There is also another lesson to learn that when play time is over, then it's over.
Most of the pages have one to two sentences on them. There are a couple pages with multiple lines but nothing that a child in first grade can't read. There aren't many big words although some words may need to be sounded out. The book itself is more suitable for younger kids in my opinion. Our son loves this book while our daughter thinks it's babyish just to pick up and read. She does however, like to read it to her younger brother though. One thing about the text is that the print is a little weird. The font that it is done in may make some of the words a little difficult to read.
The story is easy to follow along with whether the child is reading it or if the child is just listening to the story. Too bad Rolie Polie Olie wasn't on TV anymore but at least they still have this book!
