| dlstewart's Full Review: Rolodex Open VIP Card File 500 2-1/4 x 4 Cards/24 ... |
A coworker has left the company, and I am going through her files to sort and organize. One of those files includes all the cards in her Rolodex Open VIP Card File. This card file is much larger that the Rolodex Petite Covered Card File that I use, and it certainly takes up more space on my desk.
Description
This Rolodex VIP Card File somewhat resembles a sleigh bed. Each end has black plastic sides that are slanted at an angle. The middle of the card file is slightly arched like a bridge. The product is long, measuring 9 5/16" x 4 1/2" x 4 9/16". The base is constructed of high-grade polymer and comes in two colors: black (like the one on my desk) and platinum.
With the base comes 500 (2 1/4" x 4") blank white file cards with punch-outs on the bottom of each card that fit on sliders molded into the base. There are 24 A-Z blue index guides that are included. Each letter of the alphabet is on one card with the exception of the last two cards: W-X and Y-Z are printed on the last two cards. The index cards are constructed of a heavier card stock than the blank white file cards.
My Experiences
Where is the dust cloth? That was my first reaction when I touched this card file. The card file is open, no cover, and the black plastic and top of the cards are dusty. Not even handling the black plastic base removed all the dust. This card file requires some serious cleaning. Now I dont want you to think this file was never used. My coworker constantly plowed through these cards in search of phone numbers and addresses.
My second reaction was, This card file is messy. My coworker had inserted business cards amidst the white Rolodex cards. So the cards in the file were not the same height, and the business cards sometimes covered the A-Z index guides, making a search more difficult.
My third reaction was, This card file is a disaster waiting to happen. Im not normally a klutz, but I fumbled this card file and almost upended it. Thankfully, the file did not tip over. Most of the Rolodex cards would probably have remained in position. However, the business cards would have made a lovely paper shower across the carpet.
Despite these short comings, this VIP card file has held up well. The black plastic is sturdy with no chips or cracks. The angled end pieces slant the cards for clearer viewing. Im not impressed with the arch in the center of the file. Supposedly, this slight curve makes it easier to view the file cards. I find that the cards sometime stick out at awkward angles when flipping through them. There are times when the card file doesnt want to remain open where I position it. Some of the Rolodex cards dont want to clip onto the black plastic molded rails, either.
The file cards look good with little wear and tear. A few of the index guides, however, are beginning to split along the top. Having the business cards mixed in with the regular Rolodex cards causes problems with viewing the cards and keeping the cards neat in the holder.
In case you are wondering, my coworker solely used this card file to store names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses and assorted contact information. Most of the cards are hand-written, though some of them were fed into a typewriter and typed. Some of the cards have a piece of letterhead with contact information cut out and taped to the blank cards. An enterprising business sent her a Rolodex card the correct size printed with company information, and it is stored behind the appropriate alphabetized index guide.
Purchasing
This card file is available from Office Max for $16.79. They sell only the color black (not the platinum model).
Blank refill cards (white) cost $1.99 per 100-pack from Office Max, and the clear sleeves that protect the cards cost $4.99 for a package of 100.
Summary
The Rolodex Open VIP Card File is not my first choice for a Rolodex card file. Granted, all the cards are at ones fingertips. However, the card file is not covered and is exposed to dust ... and to anyone clumsy with a cup of coffee. After I go through this card file, I am returning it to the supply closet. Maybe someone else would like it for their desk.
I hope you have found this review useful.
