armywife's Full Review: Scott Hahn and Kimberly Hahn - Rome Sweet Home: Ou...
Rome Sweet Home is a book coauthored by Scott Hahn and his wife Kimberley Hahn. It tells the story of how they met in college and were both very involved in the ministry...as protestants. Through dating, marriage, children, seminary and life as full time protestant ministers Scott's life takes a dramatic turn when he begins to question some of the foundational principles that his beliefs rest on.
Kimberley was raised in a Presbyterian home with a father who was a Presbyterian minister. Eventually Scott and Kimberley married and went off to seminary together with nohting more than dreams of being full time ministers and raising a family together.
Kimberley received her masters in theology and Scott his Doctorate and together they moved to Virginia where Scott was hired as pastor of a local church and also taught part time as a college instructor. While still in seminary Scott began to have questions surrounding Sola Scriptura which is the argument surrounding use of the Bible alone as one's only reliable means of knowing their faith. Over the course of a few years he began to investigate on his own this argument and also that of Sola Fide which is Salvation by Faith alone. As he began to delve further into scripture and personal study he began to wonder if perhaps there was a missing piece to the puzzle.
Ironically friends and family began to notice a dramatic shift in his theological views even before he fully saw it in himself. Afraid to admit that his faith was changing Scott Hahn went through long periods of denial and depression at what appeared to be not only his faith crumbling but the hopes of his career in protestant ministry.
He recounts the personal journey with such feeling and passion that you feel as if you are there with him. You go with him to that old used bookstore downtown to find historical writings of the early church. You sit with him in his study as he secretly reads hundreds and hundreds of early catholic writings and begins to get many questions answered while many more rise to the surface. Most of all you feel the pain of his wife, Kimberley, as she watches the husband she knew slip away and become someone else. All her hopes of being a minister's wife dashed in an instance when he announces that he is going to convert to the catholic church. Devastated beyond measure Kimberely turns to Scott's best friend, another protestant minister in an effort to have some sense talked into her husband. As his friend makes valiant efforts to convince Scott that he is being misled Scott ends up throwing out so much evidence to his friend that in an unbelievable twist of events he finds his longtime friend converting to the catholic church months before he does!
This story is told from both angles. Each chapter alternates between Scott and Kimberley each one telling the story from their own angle. You truly sense the pain and anguish that Scott feels at giving up the faith he was raised with and turning to a church he has never known. Kimberley's anger at losing the husband she thought she had married and the resentment she feels when he gives up pastoral job that was supporting their family is real and intense.
Packed with pictures to take you along the journey we go from the beginning of their relationship to the time when Scott joins the church and finally to Kimberley's conversion in the end.
