kamel622's Full Review: Julia Donaldson - Room on the Broom
Another book that I recently checked out from the library, after reading a great review of it, is Room on the Broom. Since it is Halloween time I knew a book with a witch on the cover had to be great and getting a five star rating from pestyside cinched it for me!
The Story
This story starts with a witch and a cat flying through the air and all was well until her black hat flew off. She commanded her broom to go down and after landing finds that a dog hat it in its mouth.
"Then out of the bushes on thundering paws There bounded a dog with the hat in his jaws."
I was surprised as the dog easily gave the hat to the witch and then asked for a ride on her broom.
She flies along until losing the bow from her braid, her wand and after giving rides to a bird and a frog as well as the dog and the cat the next thing that happened surprised her and her hitchhikers.
Her broom snapping in two left the whole crew tumbling down and into a bog and a fire breathing dragon who wanted a witch with French fries.
Her new friends help her in a most unusual and creative way and the witch creates a broom with seats for everyone to ride!
The Illustrations
While the illustrations are a bid on the dark side, they are fun and whimsical and won't frighten even the youngest reader.
Each page is painted with colorful displays of the main character, the witch, and her friends as they fly around. The faces of not only the witch but the animals as well help to tell the story and add charm to each page.
The text is a medium large black font that is placed on a white background, making it easy to hold up and read.
Our Feelings
I've been reading this book to 4-year old Dani and was delighted to be able to share it with my (almost*) granddaughter, 11 year old Liz.
Both girls loved this book and listened intently as I read and of course using my best witch voice, I cackled and boomed and had as much fun reading to them as they seemed to have while listening.
The rhythmic rhyming text of this book gives it a cadence that is fun to read and really helps with making it a book that captivates young children. The illustrations are fun, but not scary and also add to the interest in this fun Halloween book.
I would very highly recommend this book for children from around 3 years and up to 9 or 10...but I'm sure that an 11 or 12 year old will enjoy it a time or two too!
