The Bottom Line: You really need to watch it in action, then you'll be convinced. Buy it; it cleans floors and ordinary carpets (not designed for shag).

I've now cleaned my entire house using the Roomba vacuum robot for the past three weeks, and to my surprise, this thing actually works! It looks small (about the size of a hubcap), it doesn't have powerful suction, its brushes aren't huge, it only weighs about 7 lbs...In other words, you bring it home and say to yourself, "this can't do the job. I'll probably have to return it." The only reason I bought it was because USA Today and PC magazine had good reviews of it.Why does it work? I think it's the same idea as the way dripping water can drill a hole in a rock. It goes back and forth and round and round a room, for up to 30 minutes or so. Eventually, it does clean everything well--except for the square 1" in the corners that your regular vacuum cannot reach either. Unlike a regular vacuum, though, it zips right under beds and sofas and other things with a 5" clearance. The first time you use it, you have to hang around because it will suck up so much stuff under the never-vacuumed floor under your beds that you have to empty it often. It has a small cup to catch the debris--and you just dump it into the trash. No bags needed. I'm very happy with it. It can work unattended and if you use it once a week or so, you should have no need to worry about emptying the little cup except after each room is cleaned. I recommend this little robot highly. Try it, you'll vacuum a lot more often than before--if you're like me. It makes the job as easy as flipping a switch on Roomba's side and walking away to sit on the couch and read a magazine for the next 1/2 hour. Come back and the floors are really nice and clean. And I have a dog, with dog hair!
