| chelledun's Full Review: Roosters |
I can think of few things I love more than a great brunch. In fact, I insist on enjoying at least one every time mr_chelledun and I visit a new city. We selected Roosters in St. Louis based on its close proximity to our hotel (the Omni) and its focus on crepes of all types.
Know Before You Go Roosters is located right in downtown St. Louis, within easy walking distance of many hotels and attractions. If you aren't staying in this area, you may be able to find street parking (the meters seem to be off on weekends) or there are affordable pay lots scattered virtually everywhere.
This is a breakfast/brunch/lunch joint only. Hours run from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on weekdays and 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on weekends. We arrived at around 7:30 a.m. on a Friday and found the place virtually empty. By 8:00 a.m., however, nearly all the tables were full. In other words, the early rooster gets the worm. Call-ahead seating is an option for large groups but I'm not sure about small ones. Atmosphere and Service Roosters is fairly minimalistic in terms of décor. The restaurant is clean throughout, with brightly painted walls and basic furniture. A side room features a giant painting of the restaurant's namesake covering one wall. We sat in a smaller room toward the front to take advantage of a street view, although there wasn't much people-watching to be had during the torrential downpour in which we visited.
Service is brisk and attentive. We were on a tight timeline trying to get to the St. Louis City Museum by opening time, and easily managed to be in and out of Roosters in about forty minutes without wolfing our food down. The fast service was particularly impressive given that there seemed to be no more than two servers working the entire restaurant, one of whom doubled as a hostess. Granted, taking orders is probably a little bit easier when everyone is basically ordering crepes. Food Pretty much everything on Roosters' menu looks good to me. Crepes abound, in three different categories. Breakfast crepe options include egg and bacon, bean burrito, and fresh fruit. Savor crepe options include brie with spiced apple, creamed spinach and cheddar, and ham with fontina. Sweet crepe options include chocolate chip, roasted apple, and oranges and crème. There are also more traditional breakfast items like French toast, oatmeal, and scrambled eggs. After much discussion and indecision, I ordered a S'mores crepe and a side of bacon. This turned out to be one of the five best breakfasts I have had in my entire life. The crepe was perfectly cooked, the marshmallow and chocolate perfectly melted, and the overall effect absolutely delicious. No complaints on the bacon either - it was well-cooked with just the right ratio of fatty to crispy parts.
Steering clear of the sweet stuff, Mr_chelledun ordered a savory bacon crepe with cheddar and caramelized onions. It came with a tasty spicy sauce - perhaps some type of flavored mayonnaise? While mr_chelledun enjoyed his meal, he was envious of my delicious S'mores crepe and expressed that he would order a sweet crepe with a savory side, like I did, on a future visit.
Practically all dishes at Roosters cost between $7.00 and $9.00. Our total bill including drinks was less than $20.00. Overall . . . Brunch at Roosters was the surprise culinary hit of our St. Louis vacation. Next time I'm in St. Louis, I will absolutely go back for another S'mores crepe and some bacon. If you're looking for an amazing meal at a quaint local breakfast joint, Roosters is definitely something to crow about.
