Pros: Moisturizes my lips like none other, very inexpensive, nice light scent
Cons: None, not a one
The Bottom Line: Smith's Rosebud Salve is the best lipbalm I've ever used. I don't even try new lipbalms now. There's no need.

| SHeineman's Full Review: Rosebud Perfume Smith's Rosebud Salve |
My favorite lip product has been in my family for years, even though I never even knew it. Many years ago, my great-grandpa owned a small general store in our home county. It's not in business anymore, hasn't been since I have been alive, although my Dad has some great memories of it. He sold groceries, toiletries, tools, and whatever else you can imagine you'd find in cute little country stores.
Fast forward ahead about 60 years. I was at my grandma's overnight and she saw my pot of Smith's Rosebud Salve . She was shocked because they had used it many, many years ago and believes my grandfather had sold it in his little store. I had an extra pot (or 2 or 3 or 4. I always have extra!) and dropped it off to her house the next time I was there. She's as crazy about it as I am. Smith's Rosebud Salve is an old product that has a huge following in beauty magazines and among beauty fanatics. If I could give everyone one product from the things I love most, it would be a pot of Rosebud Salve
A Little History
Rosebud Salve was first prepared by a druggist in 1892 so it's been around for a long time. Here's an article about the company, if you are interested. It's still family owned.

I'm a sucker for anything in vintage looking packaging, and Rosebud Salve claims right on the blue tin that it hasn't changed its packaging since 1962. You get 0.8 oz of product, so a pot lasts for quite some time. The price is great compared to a lot of lipbalms, $5 give or take a few cents depending on where you purchase it.
The pot lists Rosebud Salve's potential uses on chapped skin, blemishes, diaper rash, and detergent burn. I can't claim its helped any of these things. I've never changed a diaper in my life, try to avoid doing dishes, and admittedly have tried it on a blemish with no effect, either good or bad. I've used it in a pinch as a cuticle cream, and it works well for that. I learned in a not so pleasant way that I'm allergic to an ingredient in one brand of toothpaste and this did soothe the sore, flaky skin I got around my mouth. But what this product is most often recognized for its use as a lipbalm.
Greatest. Lipbalm. Ever.
I once was a fickle lipbalm lover. I tried a bunch but still went off looking for more. Kiehls (chant with me, overrated *clap clap clap clap clap* overrated *clap clap clap clap clap*), Burt's Bees (bee stings feel better than my dry lips did after this), Prada (I went through this faster than a dog on a hot day), Philosophy Kiss Me (good but not Rosebud Salve). I don't even care to try new lipbalms, this one is perfect. I love it when that happens!
Rosebud Salve is a petrolatum based balm with a texture similar to a lighter version of Vaseline. Its pink color doesn't hurt (I am crazy about pink!). It's not enough pink to add much more than a sheer gloss to your lips though. It's not sticky and not thick on the lips. It's nice for wearing over lipstick to give it a little sheen but works well underneath lipstick or gloss.
The thing I love most about Rosebud Salve is just how well it moisturizes my lips. If I put it on at night, I wake up with super soft lips. I haven't had a single problem with my lips getting dry or flaking since I started using this a couple of years ago. It's gotten a couple of friends of mine through the dry lips associated with Accutane. It's the best!
I like the scent. It's light, a little rosy, nothing like Grandma's rose perfume. I don't really even notice it that much anymore. They have a Strawberry version if you are averse to the smell but it's not the same product and not nearly as good.
Purchasing
Smith's Rosebud Salve can be purchased at a lot of places, including Sephora (brick and mortar and online), Nordstrom, and many other varied retailers. I was thrilled to find it at trendy local clothing shop and also have seen it at Anthropologie.
