Pros:Adds volume and smoothness to hair, rotates on its own, 2 speeds.
Cons:HUGE! For long hair only, have to hold button down during use.
The Bottom Line: Works best on hair that is longer than shoulder length.
Eighteen months ago I went nuts and cut off all of my long hair. I dont really know why. I plead insanity on that whole incident. Its all grown back now and nearly as long as it was before I hacked it off so I dragged out my Roto Styler again. Ive missed my old spinny-brushed friend and what it does for my straight, limp hair.

Im an infomercial junkie. Ill watch the same infomercial over and over again even if I already gave in and bought the product. The one that really fascinated me was the one for the RevoStyler. I wanted it so badly but was unwilling to spend $80 for a hairbrush and Ive got a problem with ordering from unknown TV vendors anyway. QVC or HSN are fine but I shy away from the others due to some horror stories Ive heard. Anyway, I had been coveting the RevoStyler for many months and wishing I could find it in a retail store. One day I was walking around Bed Bath and Beyond and noticed the RotoStyler, which is a knock off version of the Revo but for less than half the price. I whipped out my 20% off coupon and bought that thing faster than you can say Visa or Mastercard.
The reason Im so fascinated by this product is that it claims to give you that just stepped out of the salon look but in your own home. You know the look Im talking about. The one where your stylist does that magic with the hair dryer and the round brush that can never be duplicated at home. The Rotostyler claims to be the tool that can give you the same look quickly and easily at home.
The RotoStyler is an electric round brush that rotates up to 100 times per minute with the push of a button. It claims to easily grab onto and straighten and add shine to even the most difficult hair in no time at all. Ionic strips control frizz and fly away ends, infrared strips heat hair from the inside out, and shining strips give hair spectacular shine. The RotoStyler has a 2 speed motor which allows the brush to spin fast or slow. It has a long, tangle resistant cord and comes with a video and styling guide.
The RotoStylers bristles are about a half inch long. They are arranged in a vertical line like a comb and are attached to strips of plastic that pivot. Altogether there are 10 strips of bristles on the brush. So the brush head itself is really wide in circumference but it doesnt contain tons of bristles for hair to get caught in. The plastic strips to which the bristles are attached are different colors. There are grey, blue and red strips and each is supposed to do something different (ionic, shining, infrared) but they just look like plain old plastic so I dont see how it is possible for them to do anything special other than hold the bristles.
The brush gets its power from the AC cord that is included. One end plugs into an electrical outlet, the other directly into the end of the brush. To operate the brush, simply select the speed (low or high) and then push the direction button to make it spin. The brush spins in both directions depending on which button is pressed.
For starters, there is no way that the average person could use this product effectively without help of some sort. The brush handle is fairly thick and you have to hold down the button while also holding the handle and managing your hair so its nearly impossible to do both unless you have three arms. I use a product called a Hairmaid which holds my hairdryer for me so I have both hands free to fiddle with clips, brushes, my hair, etc. In addition, the brush head itself is really, really big. If I take the thumb and forefinger of both hands and make a circle, it just fits around the brush.
To use the RotoStyler, I first dry my hair until it is about 75% dry before trying to use the brush. After it is fairly dry I grab the RotoStyler and turn it to high speed and select the direction I want it to rotate and then wrap my hair around it. It does grab onto the hair on its own, but I find it easier to use my free hand to put the hair on top of the rotating brush. Then I just let it spin around under the hot air and let it do its magic.
After using the RotoStyler I do get good results but only when my hair is longer than it is now. My hair is shoulder length right now with some shorter layers on top so it doesnt really curl my hair or give it tons of volume. My bangs have grown out so they are almost to my upper lip but they still dont completely wrap around the brush so the result is straightening and smoothness with a little bit of volume and just the slightest bend at the very ends. I think this product works best on shoulder length or longer hair. When my hair is longer it wraps around the brush more and I get lots of volume, smoothness and shine and Im really happy with my hair. Similar brushes have multiple brush heads that can be switched for different hair lengths or different results. I wish the RotoStyler was the same because the brush is really large. Too large for most peoples hair. The strips to which the bristles are attached pivot slightly during use so the hair does not get stuck in it and it allows for changing direction. My hair isnt super long so Im not sure if longer hair would get stuck or twisted in the brush. My hair is almost completely straight to start with so I cannot vouch for how this brush would work on wavy or curly hair.
The direction button is a bit of a pain. You have to hold the button down while holding the handle which can cause strain on the hand and wrist. It would be better if you could just push the button down and it would stay down until you either turn it off or change direction. I do like that it spins in both directions though as it allows the user to use her dominant hand to do all the styling.
As for the ionic, infrared, and shining strips
. I think thats kind of a crock. Theyre just strips of plastic to which the bristles are fastened and I dont see how they can have any kind of special powers.
I sometimes use mousse for extra volume which works fine but if I use something thicker like gel or cream, the brush doesnt slip thru the strands of hair as easily and the motor seems to get a little bogged down.
I like the RotoStyler but it is kind of large and unwieldy. I am fortunate that I have the Hairmaid to give me a hand with styling which helps me to achieve good results. My hair isnt quite long enough to get the full benefit of this brush. Another 2 inches of growth and Ill be able to get it wrapped completely around the brush. It would be useless for anyone without long hair.
