patch3boys's Full Review: Roundup Concentrate Weed and Grass Killer: Roundup...
Round Em' Up
Round Up Weed Killer is one of the most effective weed Killers and weed "preventers" on the market today.
Up until a year ago, we had no idea of the benefits of using Round Up. We lived in a house where our entire back yard was dirt, except for the a little patch of grass where we had our children's Play Gymn on.
Imagine our surprise our very first year there when we finally opened our drapes after a LONG wet winter and the weeds (which by the buy, were only barely covering the ground the last time we had looked) were now taller than my toddler!!! What a mess..... I won't even go into the boring details about what an ordeal it was to clear all that out, but it was a lot of work. This became the dreaded yearly Spring Project for the 5 years in which we lived there.
When we moved into our new house, we decided to get a jump start on landscaping our yard before winter began. We paid to have someone draw up a landscape plan for us based on how we wanted our yard to be set up. The Landscaper left us with the blueprints, a $300 bill and a tip that we can never repay him for. As he was walking out the door he left us with one last bit of advise and that was, if we were planning on waiting till next spring to get started on our yard, to make sure we put Round Up Weed Killer down around the entire house to avoid having to deal with all the weeds.
After having dealt with the same situation for so many years prior at our old house and now living at a house with a MUCH larger yard, we were willing to give anything a try. I am so glad that we did!!! I can't tell you how wonderful this stuff works.
We have now gone an entire year without any weeds at all around our entire yard except for the occasional stubborn one that has made its way through. My husband and I can just "kick" ourselves for not finding out about this sooner. We would have saved our self so much yearly work, just for spending $25 every 3 or 4 months and taking about 15 minutes of our time to walk around and spray on the Round Up.
How it works
You can either spray Round up on the dirt to "prevent" the weeds from coming up in the first place (this is what we did here.... It was very sucessful. I can count on 1 hand how many weeds actually came up after the dirt was treated)
Or you can spray the actual weed itself. What happens is when you spray the weed, the weed killer will absorb into the plant, down to the root. It will kill the entire weed, root and all. A treated weed will not be able to make its own food to survive. The weed will die and will not grow back.
****Note: Although you can't spray Round Up directly on plants and flowers, you can use it around the plants and flowers without it hurting your garden. Once you treat a weed and the Round Up goes into the root, Round Up then breaks up into natural materials in the soil and will not effect near by plants.
Where you can use Round Up
Round Up can be used basically anywhere you have weeds. Some of the following places where we used Round Up and found it to be very productive are:
•Flowerbeds
•Soil/Dirt that has not been landscaped yet
•Cracks in the Cement (In your drive way, concrete patio, etc...)
•Around the edges of your grass where weeds come up and even directly on a weed in the middle of the grass. (we have applied Round up like this once or twice and it didn't effect the grass at all. Just make sure you only squirt the weed and not the surrounding grass.)
How to Prepare Round Up
Although I have noticed that you can buy the "ready to go" trigger spray bottle, we have always purchased the concentrated in the larger bottle. (maybe the spray bottle is good for smaller jobs... I am unsure, but it just doesn't seem like there would be enough in that bottle to do your entire yard.)
My husband went up to Sears and purchased a cheap sprayer. It has a small tank where you will mix your Round Up and then has a short little hose and sprayer attached. This squirts out a real "fine" mist when being sprayed. (Don't quote me on this but I believe he paid around $24 for this... not much and it is reusable every time you use your Round Up. This has been invaluable and worth the small amount we initially paid for it)
All you do is follow the directions for the ratio of Round Up and Water, and make your mixture. Then go around your yard and spray all weeds and empty soil. (My husband does this ever 3-4 months. You will know it is time when you start to see little weeds starting to randomly pop up. Just make sure you get out there and reapply your Round Up, before those weeds take over.... because they can, VERY quickly!)
Safety
As with working with any chemical, you should either wear gloves while handling Round Up or make sure you wash your hands thoroughly after you have finished.
All though you should keep children and pets away while you are applying the Weed Killer, once it dries, it is perfectly safe to allow children and pets to be around the treated areas. Just make sure it dries first and for sure that they are not out while it is being applied.
(What my husband does is we will bring all the kids in and treat the yard in the evenings when the kids wont be going out anymore for the evening. Just to ensure that everything is safe before they go out again the next morning.)
Overall
I can't sing the praises loud enough about Round Up Weed Killer Since we have moved into our new house a year ago, we are the only person on our Court that has a back yard full of dirt and soil instead of weeds. We have even had a few of our neighbors come over and ask us how we managed to keep all the weeds out and we were able to pass on to them the same very helpful tip that was given to us.
Round Up Weed Killer is the best at killing weeds and keeping them gone. I will continue to recommend this product to all those whom I come in contact with and will always have plenty of Round Up available to keep our yard weed free.
