Rowenta replaced the old--and terrific--580 model with the 5030. The difference? The old one had a stainless-steel boiler and the new one has a PLASTIC boiler. Rowenta saved themselves a few bucks, but the consumer gets a product that: (a) will wear out (heat-stress cracks) much faster, and (b) fills the room with obnoxious fumes. Most (I've heard "all") plastics off-gas chemical fumes for a long time, and the process gets worse when heated. Imagine what happens when you heat water to a high boil under pressure ... and then release the steam right where the user can't help but breathe it in. The couple of few times I used this model I got so dizzy from the fumes I had to leave the room. I'm now letting it work off some of its nasty chemicals in the garage before I'll use it again in the house (with windows wide open and a fan going). Rowenta denies this is a problem: Of course they would. Corporations don't care about anything but profit. I'd gladly pay the extra few bucks for a stainless-steel boiler. The Reliable model would be a good choice (SS boiler plus a nice old-fashioned iron), but there is no steam-level adjustment (very helpful if you don't want to power-blast your thin cotton clothes). The best choice is the Koenig model KIS but that's $400 bucks. I guess I'll wait til this stupid Rowenta wears out ... or I get done in by the fumes.
