It's an Experience! Eating at Roys is an experience you do not want to miss. The food is presented in a manner that is unique to the restaurant industry, and the service, decor and, of course, the taste make you want to keep coming back for more.
I schlepped along with my husband on a business trip to the Westin Seattle this past month. While he was talking business, I was dining and observing the surroundings at Roys. What an incredible place!
The restaurant is situated on the ground floor of the Westin Hotel in downtown Seattle. Due to the structure of the Westin, Roys is in a semi-circular form, which makes it quite interesting. Most of the seats, (perhaps all do, as I did not go to the very end of the restaurant), have a window view of the exciting hustle and bustle of downtown Seattle. It is quite a contrast...the peace and calm inside the restaurant and the rush of the city outside.
I was amazed to find no reservations required and no wait for either dinner or lunch. The restaurant did appear to be quite full, though, and I think if it were a special occasion, I would make the effort to make a reservation.
The cuisine served at Roys is Island style, and the presentation is spectacular. My dinner consisted of a crab crusted fish, scalloped potatoes, vegetables, and a type of pumpkin soup. I, of course, expected the typical cup of soup in a bowl, along with potatoes, vegetables and crab crusted fish served on another plate. I was looking forward to seeing how crab meat could be made into a crust. When my plate arrived, the soup was swirled around the edge of the plate in an attractive pattern, and the potatoes, vegetables and fish were arranged in a tower of layers topped with a crab meat "crust". Unbelievable!
I think the most unbelievable part is that I was actually going to eat this arrangement. I am not a person to mix my foods together (yes, one of those finicky people), however, it was presented in such a manner that I actually looked forward to taking the first bite..and then the second..and then the third! The flavors blended together so well, and I have to admit it was one of the best meals I have ever had in a restaurant.
Roys is famous for their chocolate souffle. Unfortunately, the chocolate souffle is only served with dinner as it takes time to prepare. This should be ordered at the beginning of the meal. At lunch, however, they serve a mini-souffle which they claim to be "almost comparable."
Our dinner came to a very reasonable $58.00 for two, and we did have the souffle. Yes, we were stuffed, but fortunately we just had to go upstairs and lie down, so it was worth the stuffing!
We also had lunch at Roys, and I had a huge portion of penne pasta. The pasta was very, very good, but unfortunately, I was unable to force myself to eat the mini-souffle. Maybe next time...
For those of us who are strictly Lipton Tea drinkers, I should state that the tea is served "island style" with the "flavors of the Hawaiian islands." I asked our waiter who was a native Hawaiian if this was the type of tea they actually drink in Hawaii, and he replied, "They don't really drink tea in Hawaii." We got a chuckle out of that comment, and I requested ice water instead.
The service was great, the servers were friendly, neat and seemed eager to wait on us.
My only regret was that I had to fly to Seattle to find this wonderful restaurant. But Roys is so eager to please, that even that disappointment was short lived! At the end of the meal, our server informed us Roys was coming to Orlando!
