My son is in the second grade but had never worn a costume to school for Halloween or taken part in trick or treating. This is because he has insisted on giving candy out and enjoys that aspect of the holiday. Both my sons are autistic and have sensory issues as well, so wearing itchy costumes has never been of interest to either of them. I have not pushed the issue having been relieved of the costume shopping that I would endure in the process.
I did make the mistake when they were younger and in preschool to purchase them costumes. I learned the hard way that this was a waste of money and time to coax my children into the costumes. They wanted no part of it until this past Halloween when my son became obsessed with Yu-Gi-Oh!. I noticed the merchants selling this costume for $29.99 and was not sure I wanted to brave the mall in search of this item.
I chose to venture into eBay territory for costumes and found myself in a bidding frenzy weeks before October 31st was to arrive. I paid about twenty dollars for Rubies Yu-Gi-Oh! costume in the large size. This includes the mask with the rubber band in back with knot. My son did not like being confined with the mask, but that could be due to his disability. The mask is a hazard for kids under the age of three.
The material is 100% polyester, 1996 Kazuki Takahashi, made in the U.S.A. in a bright purple shade. The photo can be viewed here,http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0000AMA9C.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg. The label states this is machine wash only in the gentle cycle and then line dry. A cool iron can be used and no bleach. Keep the child away from open flames when wearing the Rubies Yu-Gi-Oh! costume.
The size is not explained on the tag for what a large is, but my son turns nine in two months so I would say age 7-10 would fit this, but might not be entirely accurate, depends on the weight and height of your child. My son weighs 61 pounds with a thin build. I have seen the large being referenced as size 12 14, but find that hard to believe since my son fit this and he wears size 8 in pants. You also need to take into account the child will be wearing clothing underneath, so you need to have room and when wearing at night a jacket would be appropriate.
The jumpsuit is a thin material with straight legs that taper off tightly at the ankles. There is a black belt at the waist that is part of the jumpsuit and sewn into it. The cloak is attached with the tie at the back of the neck for the jumpsuit. You need to step into this through the legs and pull it up over your body.
The arms go through the slots, the black collar is made of foam and not irritating to the skin according to my son. My son is 54 ˝ inches tall. The buckles are painted on in the shade of black, white and gold. The pant leg went all the way to his ankles, but there was no need for a cuff at the bottom. The day he wore this outfit to school they had a parade on the playground and a large bouncing machine with ten-minute intervals for kids to go inside, take shoes off and jump around.
I have the photos from that day and my son had no problems jumping in the outfit, he did take off the mask, that was kept on only during the parade and for picture taking. Since both my sons are autistic this was not a good thing to wear with his brother wanting to pull it off his face, plus the mask is a choking hazard for children under three.
The mask has slots for the eyes, nose and mouth. My son did have a hard time seeing while this was on. The eyes are brown with the other colors being red, yellow, beige and black. The elastic tie band is located behind the ears and makes it easy to carry while walking if not able to wear for extended periods of time.
My son was thrilled to wear his first costume to school and glad to see only one other child at the school wearing the Rubies Yu-Gi-Oh! childs costume. When I first received the jumpsuit I washed it in the gentle cycle as recommended and hung it up in the bathroom to dry. I never use a dryer for my childrens clothing so we can extend the life of the material. I have kept the costume folded up in a large ziploc bag as opposed to hanging it up on a hanger in the closet. It becomes less wrinkled this way.
This is a great costume for the Yu-Gi-Oh! fan to role play as his favorite character. The outfit is not the same one as we see portrayed on the notebook and cards we have, but it is similar. It would have added to the costume to have gloves for the hands, but this worked out well for my son just as it is.
