| judywebber's Full Review: Ruby's - Redondo Beach |
I wasn't alive during the 1940s, but, the owner's mom, the original Ruby, was. Ruby's is now a chain of diner-style restaurants, with a 1940s theme.
Ruby's is fun, and the food is great!
Walk into Ruby's, and feel that you've stepped back into the past. The decor features clean lines, and banquette style booths, along with red, white and chrome color scheme.
Ruby's manages to keep the 40s theme going, with gigantic milkshakes and malts, served the old-fashioned way, with the glass accompanied by the metal mixing cup. The cup has a small amount "leftover", and can be shared with a fellow diner or kept and consumed. They have quite a variety of flavors, and each one is served with real whipped cream and a maraschino cherry. They also serve flavored Cokes, like cherry and vanilla, and hard to find drinks like root beer floats. In fact, the last time we visited Ruby's, we put a quarter into the gigantic gumball machine (sorry, it's not a penny these days!), and out came a red gumball. We were told that by showing the cashier the red gumball, we were entitled to a free root beer float on our next visit!
They also feature a full menu, with burgers, fries, onion rings, and have somehow managed to add current, trendy items. I've had fish tacos there, Kobe beef burgers, turkey sandwiches, and many different types of salads as well. All delicious, and served with a smile.
Breakfast is served, too, and it's outstanding.
Prices are a little high, but portions are large, and quality is excellent. Kids' menu items are fairly priced, and there is a large variety available.
The Ruby's we visit is in the Redondo Pier area, located in Redondo Beach, California. On Friday evenings, there is a gathering of classic car enthusiasts, and it's a visual treat to view these restored cars before and after dinner!
