Rumor Has It.... With Jennifer Aniston and Kevin Costner

Jun 24, 2006

Rated a Very Helpful Review

Pros:Aniston is cute as usual, Coster and MacLaine's characters

Cons:not all that much depth, some failed humor attempts, could have been better

The Bottom Line: It gets my slight recommendation because it was interesting, but I didn't feel it was all that great of a film.

"Life should be a little nuts; otherwise it is just a bunch of Thursday's strung together." --Kevin Costner as Beau Burroughs

That's the quote that I took away from Rumor Has It starring Jennifer Aniston, Kevin Costner, and Shirley MacLaine. Not the best movie quote I have ever heard, but one which I fully agree with, and one that expresses everything about what this film entails. Rumor Has It stars Jennifer Aniston as Sarah Huttinger who has been struggling to find her own identity, and is having a problem being happy with what she has. Recently engaged, she finds herself very afraid of what the future holds, and even though she really likes the guy that she is with, she isn't ready to fully commit. This includes keeping the engagement a secret from her family, which we can see as a form of denial that her character must eventually deal with. While going back to her hometown of Pasadena, California for her sisters wedding, things from her past start to present themselves and that is where we have a story.

It turns out that her mother vanished a week before her wedding and went to Mexico to spend time with a man that had been with her Grandmother. Many references are made to the story of The Graduate, and this film plays off that story as the premise to the plotlines here. Learning that her family’s life is that of The Robinson's in that story, in which both mother and daughter spend time with the same man, Sarah (Aniston) becomes curious if this mystery man could be her father. Finding nothing in common with the man she thought was her father for her whole life, and feeling completely lost in a family she seems nothing like, she grasps at the hope that there could have been more to her past than anyone else is aware. This leads the movie on a quest for discovery as Sarah learns more about herself, what is important, and what love actually means to her and the people around her.

This isn't that involved of a story, even though it could seem like it from my description of the plot. It is basically about one woman's struggle to find her own identity and to be happy with whom she is. Surrounding that story are sub-stories involving her fiance (played by Mark Ruffalo) and interesting relationships with her sister and her grandmother. I think they did a really good job of casting when they went with Shirley MacLaine as the family matriarch, and equally well with the casting of Kevin Costner as the mystery man. Costner has found a new calling as a supporting actor in movies, and I am so pleased to see him take on roles where he doesn't have to take full control of all his screen time. He is able to blend into the story, and actually shows off some of his acting talent in this film. For someone not often in the romantic comedy scene, he performs quite well.

Aniston is her normal cute self, but is finally given some personality flaws that are believable to me as an audience member. I actually liked how she portrayed her character, but at the same time I didn't like the character and her inability to be happy with what she already has. In addition to that, there were times when I was questioning many of the decisions that the characters in the film were making, and why the writing team decided to set us up at times to think things that might not be correct. When looking at the film as a whole, I guess my recommendation has to come from whether I enjoyed the movie, or whether I thought that it was really funny. Well for a romantic comedy, I didn't laugh at any of the jokes, and only rarely smiled at some of the undertones of the story. It was a somewhat interesting film, in that I did care about what would happen to our main character, but I didn't end up liking the film when it was over. I think it will be interesting to big Aniston fans, and that it has aspects which will create fans, but my final evaluation still ends up being that this was just an average film.
