*laugh* I understand. I've always preferred the darker version. Personally I think that protecting children from the darker sides of life isn't always the best way to go (as long as you're careful about it and all), but I understand that each family has to make that decision for themselves.

One of the things that the library actually had where I grew up was books of mythology from various countries. Not quite the same thing as fairy tales usually, but still a lot of fun. That's what I got hooked on. :) I don't think they had much in the way of fairy tales from other countries (sigh).

Russian fairy tales... (Reply to this comment)

I always loved reading fairy tales from around the world when I was little. The darker, anti-Disney feel of them didn't bother me a bit. Like plot-holes and other fantastic events, you expect such things in fairy tales! And I liked reading about strange customs and practices, too.

It probably worried my mother that I'd read exclusively fairy tales...but perhaps not as much as it worried her when I read exclusively about ghosts, werewolves and vampires. ;D

I need to make Jeffrey read this book next. :) He'll love it.

Yep, you could make an RPG out of it. You'd want to make it one of those small RPGs, though, along the lines of Munchausen or Pantheon or something. Something put out by Hogshead's "New Style" line, most likely.

Oops, but Hogshead just got out of the adventure gaming industry...

Ah well. Of course, you could fake it with a rousing game of "Once Upon a Time" if all the participants were familiar with the peculiarities of Russian fairy tales, and you allowed people to re-name cards to appropriate things. :)

And I'm most happy that you enjoyed it!

As for dying animals, I'd worry less about that than dying characters. Of course, death is nothing a few drops of the water of death and the water of life can't fix. What I wouldn't give for some of that stuff.

And you're right that the unfamiliarity only makes it more a treasure. I'll always remember my shock on first reading about Ivan who liked to lay on the stove.

The real question is whether you could make a Russian fairy tale RPG.

Thank you!

Yeah, not all kids are ready for "the real thing." :) It's such an individual decision.

You did a really nice job with this book review.

While I might find this book interesting, I most likely would not share it with my children. Especially my daughter. She is quite fond of all animals and I do not think that she would take it well.

Once again ... nice job!

Disney seems to take all the "punch" out of fairy tales. *sigh* I've always preferred the originals!

Interesting statement... (Reply to this comment)

"whitewashed Disney things"

My great-grandmother - an immigrant from Ukraine - used to say something very similar. She told us that she would share "real" fairy tales.

Nice review.

Thanks,
Lisa
