Pros:Great arch support, ankle support, cushioned, supportive, durable, great for kickboxing and dance
Cons:Not sure if they're real leather, need breaking in, more rigid than some
The Bottom Line: Ryka Studio D Mid Athletic Sneakers are excellent for Zumba, dance, kickboxing, and aerobics. Very supportive, cushioned, and durable but lightweight!
I recently signed on to take some martial arts/kickboxing classes. I had no idea what type of shoe to wear so I asked the instructor. He suggested Ryka Studio D Mid Athletic Sneakers. I already had the low cut Ryka Stuido D's and they are great for dance exercise, Zumba, and other exercise. I found the mid's for a great price and got them. After I broke them in, they are the perfect kickboxing and dance shoe.

About the Shoe
Built on a foundation of Nitracel cushioning in the heel and forefoot, the low profile midcut studio shoe provides great support and stability with a sophisticated design. Arch to heel TPU shank for torsional rigidity with a leather/mesh upper for support and comfort.
The Ryka Studio D Mid Altletic Sneaker
These shoes come in an all black version, a gray version, as well as a platinum and purple color. I have the all black ones and they don't have mesh on them except on the tongue. I had to buy one half size up from my usual size 8 because my low Ryka D's needed to be sized up. The half size up fits just right. Ryka does suggest sizing up a half size for the best fit.
These shoes are not high tops but do cover the ankle. They are made of synthetic or real leather (more on that later) with some flashy strips of black and a few gray touches here and there. They have a traditional lace up front and a padded, ventilated tongue.
The soles are all rubber and have good traction but are not too deeply grooved. This is so you can pivot, swivel, and kick without getting tripped up. These are classified as a cross trainer and aren't the best for running. They're great for dancing, kickboxing, aerobics, and weight training.
When I first put the Ryka Studio D Mids on, they felt rigid. I wasn't sure I would like them. I walked around in them and felt they were just too restrictive for me although they had amazing arch support. I then decided to wear them to work out and, after a few workouts, they fit like a glove and supported my feet and knees amazingly well. They do need a little breaking in but just a few wearings should do it.
I had been wearing really flimsy mesh sneakers with no support at all for a while so the Rykas were a little bit of a shock to my system but a good one. My legs feel so much better now after working out.
There is cushioning in the toe and heel and a nice arch. The toe box is medium width. These shoes do not come in wide widths. Ryka makes only women's shoes so they taper their shoes for women's feet with a more narrow heel and support where we need it most.
One thing I am not sure of is if these shoes are real leather or not. The official Ryka website says they are leather. Some other sites say they are faux leather. The shoe itself says nothing one way or the and neither does the box they came in. I honestly can't tell if they are leather or synthetic! They are more rigid than glove soft leather like Reebok Princess sneakers which I used to wear. They definitely have more support and are less prone to getting out of shape from wear then some softer shoes.
I have been wearing my Ryka Studio D Mid Athletic Sneakers for about a month and they are comfortable, lightweight, and durable. They hold up really well to my kickboxing classes as well as to any dance or aerobic workout I put them through. They're fine for walking and walk workouts too. I probably could run just fine in them but I have running shoes that are made specifically for that.
These shoes are a great choice for those who want support and a good arch with a cushioned interior, shock absorbing sole, and ankle support. They're lightweight so you can kick up your heels without a lot of extra weight. Just be sure to order a half size up for maximum comfort or try them on before purchasing.
You can buy Ryka Studio D Mid Athletic Sneakers online at a zillion shoe stores and even Sears! The price varies widely. I only paid $39.99 for mine but they sell for over $90.00 on other sites. Definitely compare prices. Even though there is only mesh on the tongue, my shoes are cool and comfortable and my feet don't overheat.
I have been weraing my Ryka D low dance exercise shoes for months and loving them. Now I have the Ryka Studio D Mids to add to my collection. They're more supportive and help keep my weak ankles from rolling when I am kickboxing. They allow me to dance, kick, step, and do aerobics in comfort. Whether they are real leather or not, they work well for me! They do need a few wearings to break in but then they feel like a dream. 4 stars.
