| kagary's Full Review: Ryobi Cth1202k2 12v Cordless Drill/Driver Kit |
This is the third screw gun I have owned in 7 years and it performs far and away better than the other two. My first was a small Black&Decker which I received as a gift and the second a hand-me-down Makita. I wore both of them out with my usual level of do-it-yourself-jobs (one deck/year and lots of odd jobs) within two years time. I did some checking around before purchasing the third and had some positive feedback about Ryobi.
My old Makita crapped out just before starting a 20x40 foot deck replacement. The Ryobi was competitively priced and highly recommended. The kit came with two batteries, so I figured I could keep working between charges. No problems driving the 2.5 inch galvanized screws we were using for the deck. I thought the batteries were dying quickly, but reread the instruction manual and began using the low torque setting, which drives screws slowly but without bogging down. The fast setting drives well but uses up batteries very quickly. I was able to work consistently with one battery in the gun and one on the charger throughout the day. This is the first time in my experience that the batteries were not dictating my work schedule.
Durability has also been a plus. I have retractable solar screens on several skylights, which require trips to the roof twice a year. My Ryobi took a dive shortly after purchase from 40' above ground. I sulked down the ladder certain I had tossed $85.00 down the drain. To my surprise, there was no decrement in performance. Several other mishaps have proven the durability of this fine tool.
I had heard many negative comments about "quick chucks," but can't believe I went so long without one. Changing bits is a breeze and requires very little effort compared to loading a standard drill chuck. My Black&Decker 3/4" electric drill requires religious 3 point tightening on the chuck to prevent bit slippage. The Ryobi has not slipped on me yet with just hand-tightening.
Being a handyman with many handyman friends, my Ryobi has been the envy of several friends. There are many different brands of drill/drivers out there...but when your friends are taking note of the brand and model of yours...you know you have a keeper.
I should include some negative comments, but have been completely satisfied with my Ryobi 12V since day one. There might be two weeks in 52 that I don't use this tool and have not been disappointed yet.
