| js61054's Full Review: Ryobi Cth1202k2 12v Cordless Drill/Driver Kit |
I didn't need a cordless drill when I bought it but I really wanted the portability. I've had no trouble finding uses for it. I particularly like the two speed ranges. Select 1 for more control at a slower speed and 2 for flat out speed. The tool is well balanced and stands upright on its battery. Mine came with an extra battery and a fast charger. It has a keyless chuck which I assume is standard issue these days. A 22 position torque limiting clutch not including the full power driver position is a little overkill but benign. One of its best and worst features is the location of the forward and reverse switch. The switch can easily be moved from forward to reverse and back with the thumb and forefinger. It also can easily be moved out of position accidentally with my fat fingers. By positioning the forward/reverse switch in the middle position, the trigger is effectively locked. I haven't figured out if this is by accident or design. It may actually be a safety feature. Also worth mentioning are the built in screwdriver bit holders, and the soft touch body. The soft touch body reduces fatigue. Negatives are minimal. The body is wide by today’s standards and can get in the way in tight work areas. It doesn't have a trigger lock, a device to lock the drill at a given speed in the on position. Holding the trigger in position is very tiring if you have to drill a piece that takes more than minute. It also defeats the variable speed feature because you must hold the trigger at a set RPM which is impossible.
I looked at a number of cordless drills before I bought this one. A strong contender was a DeWalt but I couldn't justify the price. I would pick something else if I was a professional drill jockey, like a DeWalt or a Porter Cable but I really don't have a good reason for doing so. For home use and for the budget conscious I'd highly recommend it.
