| oscen's Full Review: Altec Lansing ACS 45.1 2 Speakers |
Last year, I struggled for a long time over which speakers to buy for my computer. Having no other source of music except for a cheap clock radio, I wanted something pretty good, while at the same time not too expensive.
I decided on the ACS 45.1, based on sound quality and price. I paid $52 at a small computer store a year ago and have been pleased with them.
To my ears the sound quality is good, although there is some distortion at the highest volume levels (like every stereo I ever owned). Volume goes pretty high, enough to bother the neighbors, but not quite as high as I might like at times.
I have had no problems from them except with the volume turned high and my microphone on. But this is common feedback and goes away with the microphone shut off or the volume turned down.
Being small low powered speakers, they have suffered from a certain amount of thinness and directionality in the sound quality: fine if you are sitting in front, but not so good if you are moving around. Quite by accident I have found that adding a second set of speakers (I have mine at right angles) eliminates this problem. The quality of the second set is not as important and the net result is better sound than that of many five piece speaker systems that I have heard.
A year ago I would have strongly recommended these speakers. At a good price, I would still recommend them, although adding on a second set of speakers (with subwoofer) to round out the sound is advised. Set up like I am now with these speakers as a first set and the Labtec LCS-2414i speakers (or similar/better speakers) as a second, I would still strongly recommend them. I am no buff, but I like to listen to a little music. Right now, my place is essentially one big speaker. Sound is pretty much 360 degrees and with as much quality and volume as I need. For a total investment with sound card of $112 ($52, $22, $38), I am quite happy.
Oh, I am running them off of an MX300 (OEM) card.
