| bastardo's Full Review: Altec Lansing ACS 45.1 2 Speakers |
I picked up a set of these last spring for my computer, and I've loved them. I listen to a lot of music on my computer (since I'm too cheap to buy a separate stereo), and I play a fair amount of video games, and they've treated me really well. They have clear sound that fills my meager dorm room, and the sub generates enough power for the purpose--actually, more than I need at times, which is good--I like to have more capability than I usually need. They have a good range and pretty good balance over this range. High notes are crystal clear, and lows rumble beautifully. Mids aren't quite as good as on some of the other altec models, but they're still very good and not muddy like on some of the competition's speakers. I compared these in the store for similarly priced speakers from other brands and was thoroughly underwhelmed with the others. They sounded very tinny and gravelly, which has never been a problem with these speakers. A neat feature of these is the volume control on the right cube, which also allows you to turn them off. Nice if someone pops in and wants to talk while you're listening to stuff. As far as hookup, they were totally plug and play with color-coded connectors. Very simple.
The main reason I like these speakers is they are cheap, compact, and sound great. I'm not one of those stereophiles who can appreciate $10000 speakers, so these do the job well enough. For anyone who wants a good value for a general purpose speaker, this is a good choice.
