| seraphim's Full Review: Altec Lansing ACS 45.1 2 Speakers |
Well, as anyone that has read my other reviews knows I am a consummate audiophile. A recovering engineer, entering the professional music industry - yep that's what I am. And in the course of Seattle's recent earthquakes I lost my old digital studio monitors. I found myself in the position of new speakers that a student's budget could afford, and bass being a primary ingredient I was looking for a 3 piece system from a reputable brand. In the past, I've never had a problem with Altec Lansing's speakers, so I decided on the ACS45.2 system as it was very reasonably priced. When I got it home I eagerly attached the speakers to my box, and was surprised at the nice low and high responses. The bass volume can be overpowering at times though, and the unfortunate reality is that I don't keep my subwoofer within easy reach as I place it for balance not convenience. I wish that the bass volume would be located on the near-field monitor speakers along with power and monitors, since the tiny sub-bass volume control is at the bass of the subwoofer and in the back. This is terribly inconvenient for system calibration or tuning. Other than that, I have been impressed by the speaker's quality. And for anyone who is on a tight budget, or who needs speakers to listen to CDs or video game noises I think you will be amazed at what a scant $79 will get you (especially since my old Harman/Kardon monitors alone cost that much). I have experienced some excessively noticeable zipper on these speakers when a sample is slowed down, but I would accept that as more of a mark of true quality and adherence to the given signal more than a downfall. Speakers that mask the zipper effect of pitch and tempo modulation often do so because of their incoherent sound and low quality of wiring and cones. My major point in this review is that if these speakers, at such a low price, work for me in a studio application - I'm sure they will work for you in your own entertainment and multimedia computer experiences. Finally, for those of you who are sick of loosing half your power strips to wall warts (those big obnoxious plugs that make it so you can't plug anything in near them) these speakers don't have one, so you save not only on money, but efficiency of power access (not to mention frustration).

If you need good quality, consumer-level speakers for home use, these are definitely a great way to go.
