| timbuktu's Full Review: Plextor PlexWriter 8/4/32 CD-RW Burner |
My first CDRW was an external parallel port HP 2x/2x/4x bought when CDRWS were just becoming popular in the consumer marketplace. While easy to setup, performance was less than stellar (took over an hour to burn one 650mb cdr) and I sold it within a year.
After waiting about a year and a half, I took the plunge and finally bought the Plextor. I had some trepidation about having to install an IDE cdrw, but the price was right (just $220!) and I couldn't resist. Everyone I knew continually hyped it up to be the best of the CDRWs out there...and I soon discovered they were right.
I bought mine online, and had it delivered. I was a little worried how it would survive the trip - but when I opened the box, I discovered it was EXTREMELY well packed with airfilled plastic.
The directions were very clear, and it made installing the drive a snap for a hardware newbie like myself. They even outlined the various master/slave drive configurations that were possible, which made it even easier to install everything. Booting up my computer, the drive was recognized by my computer and windows immediately. Depending on your BIOS and computer configuration, you may need to adjust a few things to make the drive show up... but again, the directions cover it all!.
This Plextor comes with adaptec's software that allows you to transfer files to your CDRW as if it was another drive on your computer. This is probably the most useful function for me... but the drive also comes with Plextor's own utilities that help walk you through creating data and audio cds, as well as duplicating cds.
After I got the software installed (another extremely painless process) it was time to do the final test - burning a cd.
It took less than 10 minutes to burn a 650 mb CDR disc from my HD. I couldn't believe it! Even burning from another CD-ROM drive is incredibly speedy.
Its been about 3 weeks since I bought it.. and I've probably burned 30 or so discs.. so far not a single bad disc.
Plextor is without a doubt one of the best CDRWs out there currently.. and definately should be your first choice if you're considering buying a new CDRW.
