Great review!
I have this comment though: the drive does not have to be master on an IDE channel. It's good to do that, depending on your setup, but not always needed.
I run mine as a slave on the primary IDE channel and it's doing just fine at 8x even when the data comes from the master HD on the same channel. Kinda depends on the speed of the other drives attached, and what protocols they use (PIO/DMA).
This just as a heads-up, the review was very well done.

the latest firmware update is 1.07 i believe or 1.08. I don't remember exactly. The last firmware increased the dae speeds, and previous updates improved performance with specific media (gotta love a company that tweaks their hardware that much).
I am pretty sure the 12x model has 4mb as well. Either way the buffer doesn't have to be as high as on the 8x, as the "burnproof" technology on the drive prevents buffer underruns from coaster-izing your cds.
It's a great burner, and Plextor makes the best. I've had it for a year and it's never failed me.
