The Plextor 8x20
This unit is exactly like the Plextor 8x4x32 except that ir writes at 8x and reads at 20x. By far it is the best CD-R on the market ( the Imation 8x is a Plextor unit ). Though availible in IDE ( why you want to go that route I do not know ) the scsi version(s) by far outclass anything else on the market, only the Yamaha 400 TI come close.
But then the Yamaha does not have the superb CD Dupe software that only Plextor's come with. With CD Dupe you can make bit accurate back up copies of any CD, Music, Game and PSX, and do it all at 8x. Also new to Disk Dupe is the ability to dump to hard drive if you do not have another Plextor Cd Rom reader in the system. This is great for those just getting started out in scsi and only have the Plextor 8x20 as their primary drive for reading and writing.
MP3 rips are a snap as is importation of CDDAs file from audio cd's as you system will see the files as wave files from file managers once the Plextor Software is installed.
Then there is the media, feed it anything you want, it will burn ( even 4x media will burn reliably at 8x ). I always burn at 8x no matter what the media. Best of all the Plextor works with all software packages ( EZ CD, CDRwin, Nero .. ect ) so compatibility issue is not a problem.
With a 4MB buffer coasters are practically impossible. And running other apps while it burns in the background is not a problem. Also it works fine with Ce Quadrant's Packet CD 3.0 ( cd-r compression / decompression on the fly ) very well if you files are not allready archived allready. This makes drag and drop of files or anything outside of a audio cd's a snap and allow you to make a ready to run install cd of you favorite programs.
I have run well over 200 cd-r's through this unit with barely a hiccup ( I still keep my Yamaha 400 TI in case this unit goes down ). I am only sorry I had not discovered this unit sooner! I paid a bit high for the unit as I got one when they first came out. Also unlike my Yamaha 400 TI , this thing does not favor one media over the other, which makes it my favorite device in my scsi chain.
