| davicar's Full Review: Rio Diamond Viper II, (32 MB) AGP Video Card |
I purchased the Viper II for to complete building my new Athlon 700 system and have had nothing but trouble from the card. First I checked the s3 website and found that they offered Windows 2000 drivers. Since I was planning on running Win 2K on my new system I thought this would be a great card. It has the speed to run the few games I play and good 2D performance as well. It sounded like the perfect card. I have also always liked the tools that come with the former Diamond cards.
Unfortunately, the card does not run well in an Athlon system on Win2K. There are serious problems with screen fonts not being redrawn completely after being covered rendering web pages unreadable. Many games just quit and bump me back to the desktop. The games that do work seem to be plenty speedy and the DVD playback is very good.
In order to solve my font problems though I had to turn off all acceleration which sort of defeats the purpose of a high end graphics card. This also solves the problem with games like F22 crashing...Although their performance without acceleration is terrible.
My advice (especially if you are going to run Win2K) is to go with another company. S2 simply does not seem interested in keeping up with the newer OS.
