When it comes to the Altec Lansing ATP3, Ive been left with some rather mixed emotions. First thing is first though, for the money paid, in my opinion, you won't find a much better sound out of a 2.1 system. I mean, the highs are beautiful and the mids and lows are decent. Considering you can easily get your hands on a set of these for just about $45 now days, it's a steal in itself.
However, Ive always believed in being 100% true to the public about products, so you could expect nothing less from me here. As of now, I've just finished packing up my ATP3, and sending it back to Altec Lansing for the warranty to pay for fixes. Reason being? Well, after having only had these speakers for a matter of almost 3 months, the volume started going whack on me. Yea, you heard me right. I would be sitting there, and then, although slowly, the volume would continue to rise, and top out until I would have to turn it off. This continued to happen so I called up Altec Lansing and expressed my feelings of displeasure. To my surprise, I can gladly say that in an instant, they gave me instructions on how to go about the warranty and exchange process. I did have to pay the $12 to ship it, but nevertheless, it's done.
Anyhow, when it comes to music clarity, I am a VERY big stickler. While the sound is excellent for the price range, it wasn't quite enough for me. If you are looking for a great 2.1 system for a good price, don't run off without this deal, because you WILL miss out! However, if you're VERY big on sound reproduction, or you're a volumemaster and love abusing your speakers like there is no tomorrow, you might wanna shell out a little more dough, because these puppies aren't gonna hold out for ya. Yea, they may be able to take the load physically, but audibly speaking, your sound is shot. At about 3/4 to max volume, distortion is very high. At about 1/2 volume very little is noticeable, but some is present. If you're not big on high volume, then this may very well be your set of speakers, because anything below 1/2 volume turned out to be a pure symphony of flowing sound.
Another slight con that I can't help but mention would be that the downfiring midrange speaker (the one on the bottom) actually could backfire in the way it's supposed to work. Ironically, Altec Lansing markets this as one of the high points of the system. Sadly enough, it can also cause some problems. Sometimes my desk gets a little full, and if that's the case, you may find that the downfiring mids don't even make it out from under the stands. If that's the case, you'll be left with an extremely muddy mix of highs and lows with nothing in between. Granted that yes, they can sound decent when placed correctly, but if put on a full desk with other things surrounding them, you may find yourself missing a good amount of mid-range sound.
I've found the bass to be very full FOR a sub with so little power going to it. As previously mentioned, you won't find the sub to be much of a powerhouse that can shake the walls, but it can certainly hold it's own, and when tuned properly, can make a beautiful mix with the mids and highs. One plus that does come out of that would be the treble and bass knobs being located on the right speaker. Sadly enough, you hardly see these knobs on any speakers now days, so its really nice to have them right there when you need them.
Its always harder to mention pros then cons, because what sticks out the most in your mind? What doesnt work or sound right! Even though this review may sound like a total SLAM on this system, Id back it up all the way! However, the one condition that I might warn you of is if youre looking for a TON of power. If so, I would strongly suggest the Altec Lansing 621, which sadly also runs almost twice the price (Click on the link to see my review of the Altec Lansing 621). But if youre looking for a high definition sound to a very affordable price, look no more! This very model has also won previous awards for its design and sound, so as you might imagine, Altecs continuing to do something right! For the buck, you wont get a clearer, crisper, and better bang!
