| neofusion's Full Review: Altec Lansing ATP3W 2 Speakers |
With these babies you can forget about wasting money on a stereo for your room as well as space on your desk. Yup, they're that good! And yes, they're that slim. In fact, that was one of the reasons that I chose them for my computer system. I was faced with a decision, buy a stereo and wire it to my computer or save my money on the stereo and just buy great speakers. The ATP3s had just come out and their slim satellite speakers and beefy subwoofer fit the bill perfectly. I really feel like I made the right choice in that, since I've gone broadband, I can access radio stations online as well! Altec Lansings are one of the most highly regarded speaker companies in the computer industry. However, old favorites like Boston Acoustics are entering the ring as well. In my opinion though, I think the Altec Lansings are the better value. However, if you want more surround you should consider the ATP5 package which adds two more satellite speakers.
UPDATE:
It's been nearly two years since I wrote this review and the ATP3 system still sounds as good as the day I bought it. For most of that time I've been using them on the television by plugging them into the audio out port. Every time I thought about buying a home theater system to replace them I wound up reconsidering because they were working so well. The only problem I have encountered is that the volume knob doesn't work as well as it used to. Sometimes I have to turn it alot to get any increase, and then it suddenly kicks in and I have to turn it down again. This is more an electronics problem though since sound quality is unaffected and it may be because I've pretty much left it on continuously for two years.
I've seen the prices on them drop a bit and they have been offering rebates as well. There was a point where they were selling for $30 after a mail in rebate. So the value has shot up dramatically. I have listened to the newer models and I honestly can't say that they are any better. So if you see a set of these on sale, you should feel confident that it is of excellent sound quality and will last for a long time. However, although they work fine for my home theater needs, be aware that they don't have a remote control.
I'll update this again in 2010!
