| help4u's Full Review: Toshiba Satellite 310CDS (PA1262U-S2C) PC Notebook |
This is a good, dependable laptop. I have had the opportunity to use several laptops in the last several years and found this to be the best value for the money. If you are looking at this review, you have probably found a used one; if it's a good price, I advise you to go for it.
The laptop has a CD-Rom and a 3.5" Floppy Drive built in, and that is something which is not common in laptops. Usually you have to fiddle around with an external drive, and it can be pretty tedious to say the least. With this computer, you have both, all of the time.
The computer has a great Yamaha sound system. If you play MP3's, you will find that they sound great. There is a good solid feel to the sound also, although this laptop doesn't have the subwoofers found in some of the newer laptops.
The screen is one of the only things I really do not appreciate. Although it is perfectly viewable, it is less so in bright sunlight. The passive matrix screen is also not very good at displaying movies or mpegs. One plus though is that you won't have to worry about the screen brightness slowly fade out over the years as is the case with active matrix.
The hard disk is a bit small; at 2 gigs, I continually found that I was filling it up quickly. I also found that the hard disk sometimes made a strange whizzing sound, although there has never been a problem or a crash associated with the disk. Just one of those things, I guess.
The accupoint pointing device is also great. I've used the 'glidepad' system and found that it is inefficient. It forces you to take your hands off the keyboard which slows down your typing speed. If you are a slow typer I guess it doesn't matter anyways. I personally find this to be a better utilization of the laptop surface.
This laptop has been with me for the last three years. If you need a quality computer for word processing and internet usage, this is not a bad choice. I have just given it to my younger brother who requires a computer to connect to the internet and write reports at his university which is several hundred miles from home. I am staying with Toshiba and will be buying the 2805-402.
