| momsworkinlate's Full Review: Compaq MV 940 19 inch CRT Monitor |
Recently we purchases a new computer. This computer was not part of a package we had to purchase the monitor separately. I know my husband would have been happy with another 17" monitor. I wanted a larger screen. I multitask and often have several windows open. When we went from a 15" monitor to a 17" monitor I was quite impressed. I don't like to think of going back to work and to my 15" monitor in July.
Tough Negotiations
As we stood there admiring the new computer in the store (which has all the bells and whistles my husband wanted). It was time to pick out a monitor. I blinked my lashes and smiled. :chuckle: My husband knew what I was up to and he laughed as he said "So this is the monitor you would like?". "Yes please" I replied with a grin. Our decision made it was time to go to check out.
So What About This Monitor Did We Like?
The Compaq MV940 has a 19-Inch color screen. The viewing area measures 18.00. There is plenty of room to open several windows and multitask with ease. That was our first consideration.
Uhh, will this fit in the spot where our 17" is?
My computer desk is rather large with a hutch on top. One side has a carousel with folder slots, letter trays & a small bulletin board. The other side has a horizontal shelf for paper and two vertical shelves where we store reference materials and special forms (i.e., address labels). As you can visualize, this is a large desk.
Compaq advertises that the Compaq MV940 Monitor should fit in the same sized area that other 17" monitors do. In our case this is almost true. The depth of this monitor truly is less than that of our old Packard Bell 17" monitor. The width would fit most larger desks.
When we attached the JBL Platinum Series Speakers there was a little problem. Do you remember the above mentioned carousel on the left side of my desk? Well, that carousel has to spin and it knocked off the left speaker the first time I turned it. As we did want to keep the speakers on the monitor we simply moved the Compaq MV940 monitor over to the right a little bit. The right speaker does cover a small area of the shelves but not in such a way that it makes them inaccessible.
Did I Mention Speakers?
Yes. Included with the Compaq MV940 are JBL Platinum Series Speakers. They are attractive and match the monitor well. You can attach the speakers to the Compaq MV940 monitor or you may use the included speaker stands to situate them in another area of your work space.
Anything Special About The Speakers?
There are three features that I would like to mention.
First there is a Power Switch. The Power Switch has a light. I like this feature. As it glows it is a visual reminder to shut the speakers off at night when I shut the computer down.
Next you will see the Head Phone jack. Here you can plug in your head phones and blare away while the rest of the family is oblivious. I also enjoy not having to hear bombs going off or other various forms of battle from the games the guys in my house play. :blech:
Something new which I have not seen before on a monitor/speakers is this Audio-In Port. Here you can plug in any portable audio device (i.e. MP3 Player) and play it directly over the speakers. You will need to purchase a mini-stero cord in order to do this.
Back To The Monitor
Our Compaq MV940 Monitor has available the following features for OSD (On Screen Display);
Contrast, Brightness, Horizonal Position, Horizontal Size, Vertical Position, Vertical Size, Pincushion, Trapezoid, Pin Balance, Parallelogram, Tilt, Horizontal Moire', Degauss, Color Temp, Reset and exit.
Why it has all of those features I am not quite sure. It looks great to me just the way it is.
Would You Like A Few More Spec's?
The Compaq MV940 Monitor is as I said above a color monitor. It is high frequency & digital.
The dot pitch is .26mm. The maximum resolution is 60Hz with a Display Resolution of 1600 X 1200.
There is a microphone on the top center of the monitor - integrated.
Max. Power Rating is -130 Watts. TheCompaq MV940 Monitor is Engery Star Compliant and offers Power Management.
Installation
This Compaq MV940 Monitor offers Plug and Play installation. It was installed in under ten minutes.
Is This Heavy To Move?
Decide for yourself. We are all different. In the box it weighs 65 pounds, out of the box it is 55 pounds. I think I'll pass on moving this one...
Measurements?
18.36" x 18.11" x 19.1" our of the box.
Do I Really Like It?
Yes. I am sure there are higher quality monitors out there - but this one is fine for us. The view is great, The speakers and mic work fine. The only feature I do not care for is dusting the attached speaker area. I suppose it's best to carefully use a can of air to get the dust out from between the speakers and the monitor.
If you are in the market for a new monitor I'd suggest you stop by a store (We purchased ours at Circuit City) and see it for yourself.
* Please note We paid $499.00 and it came with $100.00 rebate at Circuit City 3/01
