alison12's Full Review: Hewlett Packard Compaq iPAQ h3630 Pocket PC
The Compaq iPAQ is certainly a huge step beyond the PDA's that have been offered in recent years. From the moment I got mine, I never seemed to find a use for my year-old Palm V. The problem with the PDA's seems to be rapidly advancing technology...what's new today is gone in 6 months to a year.
My understanding is that problems in production with the iPAQ have created alot of faulty devices. My 1st one had battery problems and would never run over an hour...when it should run several hours at full charge. I was able to return it, but it's a real pain.
Additionally, I've had problems with the "reset" function. It's supposed to be just like a "reboot", however, I've found that on occasion it's like playing russian roulette. I did a reset and when the OS came back up...NONE of my data or installed programs were there!! It wiped everything out. So you have to do occasional backups or be prepared to scream bloody murder.
The accessories for the iPAQ are NOT cheap. If you want to access the internet, it's going to cost you in the neighborhood of $1000. And it's not a fast connection.
Despite its problems, the iPAQ is a real showpiece. Your friends/customers will be wowed when you play an MP3 for them or capture their signature digitally. Another cool tool I've found for it is Microsoft Streets & Trips maps. I'm never lost anymore and it's a lot cheaper than GPS. You can also do things like dial-up your network and restart a server or access a database remotely.
The iPAQ has a clear lead over its competitors. I would not buy any other Pocket PC.
