Pros: Cheap, good quality, four-channel sound
Cons: No central speaker, no digital inputs
The Bottom Line: Why spend $250 on Klipsch of you can spend $80 on these puppies?!

| codeflux's Full Review: Creative Technology FourPointSurround FPS1800 4 Sp... |
So you bought a decent sound card - probably something from Creative. Now what? - now you need decent speakers. But you don’t want to drop $250 for Klipsch. What do you do? – FPS-series. FPS = Four Point Surround. The 1800 may be the cheapest speakers that give you something more than just plain sound. First off, these speakers have four satellite speakers that you can fit anywhere – they are that small. Then, you also get a very good quality subwoofer. Then, as if that wasn’t enough, you get a wired remote volume and balance control – just stick that to your monitor. You also get a hefty spool of decent-quality speaker wires that’ll reach even if you want to mount the speakers on the ceiling – and you really can. And you get all this for under $100. Actually, that’s how much I paid in March – right now you can probably get this baby for about $80.
Now, the sound quality. It’s superb. The speakers are actually branded as “Cambridge Soundworks”, although the box has “Creative Labs” all over it. I listened to Klipsch and to FPS1800, and to my surprise, FPS1800 sounded better. Wider sound, more high-frequency sound, wider base.
One down-side is that these speakers are strictly analog – if your soundcard supports digital sound, you are out of luck (although most soundcards support both digital and analog jacks) – FPS1800 employs simple 3.5mm analog stereo jacks. Another disadvantage is absence of the central speaker – but you know what? – you don’t really need it. I listen to MP3 and play games – and I am very satisfied with these speakers.
