| dareynolds's Full Review: IBM NetVista X40 (664312U) PC Desktop |
I always wanted a flat panel monitor but always thought it was overpriced. Then Netvista All In One caught my eye with it's nice flat panel display, then I realized that this display has a state of the art Destopt PC attached to the back of it!
The Netvista sits on a base of about 9'' x 9'', the flat panel is a 17''. The footprint on my desk is for the entire PC is much less than a full size monitor takes up. My first instinct was that this machine would be a stripped down slowpoke because of it's compact size, but that was far from true, I didn't sacrafice anything in terms of functionality with the Netvista. It came with a 17 Gig hard drive, Pentium 4 CPU 1.5 Ghz and 384 Mb of RAM. I use this as my home office PC with a DSL connection and I get better performance than my full size PC in the office. I connect to my companies network and work all day in Enterprise type applications, Lotus Notes Mail and databases and this thing doesn't skip a beat. For home use I'm a die hard online shopper, banker, investment trader, researcher, etc.. and I dabble in Macromedia development and the Netvista handles it all like a champ.
It shipped with WinXP Home Edition which is great. XP includes all the features of previous Windows version for System Tools, games, networking plus a much better U.I..
IBM preloads a great help and tutorial on the Netvista. Norton Anti Virus was also included by IBM, this is a must have for anything running Microsoft Software! The speakers are solid, there's two in each top corner of the monitor. No sacrafice in sound quality. Built in microphone was included and works well. The CD Rom is tucked neatly underneath the monitor. You push a button and it conveneiently drops down for loading the CD, then it tucks back underneath out of visible sight. There's a handle on the top so you can just lift the Netvista and transport it. (Like to see you try that with a full sized Desktop!). It is not heavy either, it weighs about 17 pounds or so. The flat panel monitor easily tilts forward and back which is great for adjusting to the sunlight. You can order the Netvista with an optional swivel arm which will let you adjust the height of the monitor from the base of the Netvista. I didn't get this feature but I wish I did now. For the adventurous types that aren't afraid to open up their PC to add memory or disk space, the Netvista is so much easier than full size PC's. The back pops open in just a few steps. No tiny screwdrivers needed. I added new memory in no time flat. Two USB ports on the top, plus the standard mic/headphone jacks, etc.
I bought a wireless keyboard and mouse from IBM too ($100) and my desk has more room than ever before! I'm virtually cable free and loving every minute of it. No wires to come loose, no tower under my desk, more free deskspace than I've ever had, and a workhorse for a PC, what more can I ask for!
I honestly can't believe that every home and company is not standardizing on this type of set up. I'm still waiting to find a flaw but I've never found one. I will never go back to having a full size Desktop PC after experiencing state of that art computing with a fraction of the footprint on my desk. Plus my friends are in awe when they see and use my Netvista and they all want one too :)
