Thaaks for your kind words Jim.
It's my opinion that if you're expecting to do a lot of 11x14 work you'll be happier with a higher resolution scanner.
I even thinks you might be happier with it at 8x10 if money weren't a big factor, but the 2820 is quite capable at 8x10.
At 400 dpi printing you can crop some of a full res scan and still print 8x10.
At 300 dpi printing an uncropped scan would be 9x13, and to get up to 11 on the short side you'd be printing at about 240 dpi. That's a little thin by many standards, and that's with absolutely no cropping.
If I were shooting Velvia on a tripod, and printing to 11 x 14 often, I would start researching 4000 dpi scanners (though I won't comment on the Canoscan).
Hope this helps,
Graham.

How big of a print can you reasonably make? (Reply to this comment)

First of all, let me commend you on your excellent reviews. They're thoughtful, well written, detailed, and useful.
I'm a fairly serious amateur photographer who shoots Velvia and prints on Ilfochrome. I'm in the process of trying to move to the digital world, and am looking for a good scanner for making at least 11x14" prints from 35mm transparencies. In your opinion, are you able to make high quality prints of that size from scans by the Scan Dual II? I'm actually considering the new Scan Dual III, but the 2820 dpi resolution has me worried compared to the Canoscan FS4000US at 4000 dpi.
Thanks for any advice.
